SUMMIT BREWING TO RELEASE BONFIRE BOX VARIETY PACK

July 26, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

ST. PAUL, Minn. — There are two kinds of people in the world: Those who can’t wait for pumpkin-spiced latte season to arrive, and those who are negative about everything. Fortunately, we have something here that should please everyone. For the people who love thick fall sweaters and fragrant slow-cooked meals: The Summit Bonfire Box variety pack, featuring four delicious beers perfectly suited for the fast-approaching mild evenings which you will wisely spend drinking beers in the out of doors. And for the folks out there with bad attitudes: Well, read on!

With cool nights, colorful leaves and cozy flannels all mere weeks away, we figure it’s time to sit down by a great big bonfire throwing glowing sparks in the air and share a few 12-oz. cans each of Summit Extra Pale Ale, Keller Pils, Oktoberfest, and our brand-new Summit Cranky Woodsman — a Nut Brown Ale offering roasty notes of smoke and maple syrup.

As delicious as ever, Summit Extra Pale Ale is the first beer our Founder and President Mark Stutrud brewed back in 1986. After 32 years, our flagship is also our most award-winning beer. Most recently, it received the 2017 Great American Beer Fest Silver Medal for Classic English-Style Pale Ales.

Summit Keller Pils, our traditional and unfiltered German-Style Pilsner, is an award-winner, too, having brought home theBronze Medal for Kellerbiers at the 2018 World Beer Cup® in Nashville, Tennessee. First brewed in 2016 as part of our 30th Anniversary Series, Summit Keller Pils is new this year to our year-round lineup, and it’s basically the best beer you’ve never had. (Unless you’re one of the intelligent, good-looking people already drinking it.)

With its roots in traditional Märzen-style recipes first brewed hundreds of years ago in Bavaria, our most popular seasonal beerSummit Oktoberfest returns with its rich, toffee malt flavors and a crisp, clean hop finish. Additionally, it’s brewed with a little Grain Country flavor by way of Moravian 37 barley, exclusively grown near Rugby, North Dakota, by the cousins of Mark Stutrud.

And last but not least, for all the folks who think July is too soon to be talking about the autumnal equinox,Summit Cranky Woodsman is set to debut on limited draft lines and exclusively inside the Summit Bonfire Box with rich and roasty flavors and aromas suitable for long evenings by the campfire. Brewed with Minnesota-grown puffed wild rice, Cascade hops from Mighty Axe Farms, and Lacey barley from Alexandria, Minnesota — plus a touch of smoked oat malt and just a splash of maple syrup — Cranky Woodsman celebrates the flavorful and aromatic terroir of the Upper Midwest. WHY ON EARTH WOULD ANYONE WANT TO WAIT TWO MORE MONTHS FOR THIS?

If you’re feeling ornery, cantankerous, or just downright thirsty, join us at  the Summit Ratskeller for the first pour of Summit Cranky Woodsman Thursday, August 2. In the weeks following, find Summit EPA, Keller Pils, and Oktoberfest just about everywhere throughout our footprint, and find Cranky Woodsman on draft and inside the Bonfire Box wherever fine craft beers are sold.

Breakside Brewery Releases “Thirst Trap”

July 26, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Portland, Oregon  – Breakside Brewery, known for its innovative, experimental and diverse beers, has added “Thirst Trap” to its IPA series. This rich brew boasts a flavor and aroma profile that is at once surprising and entirely perfect, which can best be described as “Christmas in the tropics.”

“Thirst Trap continues our exploration of the far reaches of the world of hazy and juicy IPAs. What excites me about this particular beer is the way that it combines some hops that some brewers have written off as old school– Chinook, specifically– and really highlights just how contemporary a profile it really has,” said Ben Edmunds, brewmaster for Breakside Brewery.

He continued, “Chinook has these huge grapefruit notes, and when you pair it with Mosaic and Simcoe, it becomes a real symphony of hop flavor. In some ways, this is like West Coast IPA gone east….kind of like what would happen if Breakside IPA, Wanderlust, and What Rough Beast had a kid sister that was way cooler than all of them.”

Thirst Trap is a study in balance. It combines the iconic complexity of the Mosaic hop with a generous helping of grapefruit-aroma-laden Simcoe and Chinook hops. This intricate aroma profile is balanced with a blend of four malts, including Two Row, Flaked Wheat, Munich and Light Crystal. Breakside brewers brought all these ingredients together to create a beer that has big notes of ruby red grapefruit, citrus zest and pine needles, paired with aromas reminiscent of guava, Sauvignon Blanc grapes, pineapple and mango. ABV: 6.4% / IBUs: 69

Released in limited quantity just for three months of the year, Thirst Trap is brewed in small batches and will be extremely fresh until it disappears completely in mid-fall. With no fewer than three pub locations in the greater Portland area, Breakside’s culinary team is always thinking ahead to provide the perfect pairings for each release coming out of the brewhouse. Thirst Trap is flexible with food pairing options that run the gamut from seared flat iron steak with whipped potatoes to pan fried trout with kale Caesar salad.

Look for one more creation coming up in the Breakside Rotating IPA Series before the end of this year, along with about 15 further limited and series releases ranging from IPAs to barrel-aged rarities.

About Breakside Brewery
Breakside Brewery opened in 2010 in Northeast Portland as a restaurant and pub brewery. The brewery is known for its innovative, experimental and diverse beers. In 2013, Breakside expanded operations to Milwaukie, OR with a 30 bbl production brewery filled with 30, 60 and 120 barrel tanks, barrel rooms for wild and non-wild/sour fermentations, a high-speed bottling line and a 24-tap tasting room. The brewery expanded to Northern California in 2016 and in 2017 Breakside opened its third location in the Slabtown district of Northwest Portland. In addition to winning several national and regional awards for its beers, Breakside was named Brewery of the Year at the 2017 Oregon Beer Awards and the 2017 Best of Craft Beer Awards. Breakside sells on draft and in 22oz bottles in Oregon, Washington, Hawaii, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, North Carolina, South Carolina, Massachusetts, New York, Vermont, Maine, Northern California, British Columbia and Alberta. www.breakside.com

Wild Leap Brew Co. to Release 2nd Volume of Alpha Abstraction Double IPA

July 25, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

LAGRANGE, GA. — Wild Leap Brew Co. is proud to introduce Volume Two of its new, limited edition series of juicy double IPAs known as Alpha Abstraction (8% ABV).

The first volume ranks as Wild Leap’s fastest selling beer in their history, and is currently ranked as one of Georgia’s top rated beers in the state. With the love the first volume received, the Wild Leap team can’t wait for fans to try Volume Two.

The new Alpha Abstraction is a blend of Citra and Galaxy hops loaded with refreshing, tropical fruit flavors.

What flavor sensations can craft beer lovers expect? Citra brings a lot of delicate, fruity characteristics, including lime, grapefruit, mango and bright orange. Versatile Galaxy is known for its distinct passionfruit, pineapple and citrus aromas.

To create Alpha Abstraction, head brewer Chris Elliott adds hops early in the process for bitterness and then again during the last minutes of the boil to extract more alpha acids and achieve a vibrant taste sensation.

The “alpha” in the Alpha Abstraction name refers to the alpha acids in hops. Playing with the alpha acid content is what gives a beer it’s wonderful aromas and level of bitterness. And double dry hopping is an art form, if somewhat of an abstract one.

Volume Two of Alpha Abstraction will be released the week of July 30th, and will be available in six packs and on draft in restaurants and bars. Alpha Abstraction was brewed with freshness in mind so the faster it goes from brewery to tastebuds, the better. Check out our Beer Finder on the Wild Leap website to find Alpha Abstraction near you.

Reuben’s Brews Launches New Barrel-Aged Sour Series

July 25, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON— Reuben’s Brews, a family-owned Seattle neighborhood brewery, introduces its new barrel-aged sour series with the release of Brettania – Boysenberry and Blackberry. Nearly a year and a half in the making, Brettania is a rustic saison made with boysenberries and blackberries, and has already medaled at the prestigious 2018 North American Beer Awards. The brewery also released Tropical Funk – a brett IPA – at the brewery this past weekend, another great example of the type of beers that can be expected from this new venture.

“What interests me most about brewing is the challenge. The challenge of creating something, the challenge of new processes, the challenge of managing living organisms to create the flavor profile I was aiming for,” said Adam Robbings, co-founder and brewmaster for Reuben’s Brews. “Our new barrel-aged sour series represents one of these challenges. It is an exciting genre of beers and we jumped at the chance to explore the world of bacteria and brettanomyces.”

Over the past (almost) six years, Reuben’s Brews has created all types of beers including kettle sours, IPAs, Belgian styles, stouts, barrel aged stouts, lagers and more. The brewery’s foray into barrel-aged sours began in February 2017 when they were able to isolate the project so that other beers would be protected from contamination. Two beers will launch the series:

The Brettania barrel-aged sour series will feature a new beer released every few months, each featuring a different fruit expression. Brettania – Boysenberry and Blackberry was aged for six months in oak puncheons with the brewery’s house brettanomyces culture. It was then aged again atop a heaping amount of boysenberries and blackberries for six more months and finished up with another fermentation period inside the bottle. The result? A bright, dry and effervescent beer, full with jammy fruit character that is perfect for the hot summer days. The next beer in the Brettania series – featuring guava – is already bottle conditioning and will likely be released in early fall.

Tropical Funk is a Brett IPA created with a 100 percent all stainless brettanomyces drie primary ferment. This funky, hazy IPA is packed to the gills with bright tropical fruit notes driven by the Citra and Mosaic hops, perfectly complemented by grapefruit from the brettanomyces. A little background funk and white pepper adds complexity, while a soft, pillowy mouthfeel supports the fruit forward flavor profile.

Both Brettania and Tropical Funk will be available on tap at the Reuben’s Brews tasting room; Brettania’s limited amount of 375ml bottles sold out in one day. Next up for the brewery is Pillars of Gold, a Belgian Pale ale refermented with brett during natural carbonation, which will be released on the brewery’s 6th Anniversary Party on August 4.

About Reuben’s Brews
After the birth of their first child Reuben, Adam and Grace embarked on a mission to brew bloody good beer. Originally from the UK, Adam turned a passionate hobby into a family-run brewery crafting nationally and internationally recognized beers in a wide variety of styles. Since opening in 2012, Reuben’s has won awards for its beers around the world including at the Great American Beer Festival, the World Beer Cup, the US Open and was named Mid-Sized Brewery of the Year at the 2015 Washington Beer Awards. Find Reuben’s Brews in the Pacific Northwest and at its taproom located at 5010 14th Ave NW in Ballard, open 7 days a week. For more information, visit www.brewbound.com

TAPS Opens Full-Scale Production Brewery and Tasting Room

July 24, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

TUSTIN, California. — TAPS Fish House & Brewery, a pioneer of the SoCal-Orange County craft beer scene, is bringing its innovative and award-winning touch to Tustin with the opening of its first-ever tasting room and full-scale production brewery in a 19,000-square-foot space.

The July 23 opening of TAPS Brewery & Barrel Room, located at 15501 Red Hill Ave. near Tustin Legacy, marks a new era for one of the region’s most decorated breweries, with over 100 medals to date.

TAPS Brewery & Barrel Room promises to raise the bar on the burgeoning beer tasting-room scene, offering “O.C.’s premier tasting room experience,” according to TAPS founder-proprietor, Joe Manzella.

The tasting room in TAPS Brewery & Barrel Room is reminiscent of an old brewery with arched brick walls, concrete floors, and rustic finishes along with galvanized pipe lights, custom-made locally. A corner of the tasting room will house vintage pinball and other classic video games. Outside, a comfortable patio has more games, a large fire pit and the permanently stationed TAPS food truck. Guests can savor award-winning ales and lagers and enjoy such tantalizing dishes as bulgogi beef masa fries, bánh mì bacon-wrapped hot dogs, and a hippie burger.

The brewery will begin by producing 5,000 barrels the first year, with a capacity of 25,000 barrels annually. TAPS’ barrel-aged beer program will have its own dedicated, 350-capacity barrel room. Both ales and lagers will be produced daily for distribution and onsite enjoyment, but there will be a focus on lagers, which have won TAPS six GABF/World Beer Cup medals since 2015.

TAPS brewers are Kyle Manns, director of brewing; Jonathan Chiusano, brewery operations manager; Erik Zwack, head brewer, TAPS Corona; Brennan Perry, head brewer, TAPS Brewery, Tustin, and Max Jones, QAQC/packaging manager.

The team has purchased brewing and bottling equipment from leading manufacturers in Europe and North America and will continue to source the finest malt, grain, hops, and yeast.

“I’ve often said I’m in business to make money, not save it,” Manzella said. “Investing in the best equipment possible for our brewers is paramount to our success. It’s been part of TAPS’ philosophy since day one.”

Twelve-ounce bottles will be available in six-packs and by the case. Also for sale in the brewery are 32-oz “crowlers” and 64-oz stainless steel, refillable insulated growlers. Barrel-aged brews will be available in about six months in 500-ml bottles. Beverage options at TAPS Brewery & Barrel Room include a select offering of wines and soju-based cocktails.

The opening line-up for TAPS award-winning brews may include The American Cream (formerly Cream Ale), Irish Red, Flex IPA, Amend This!, Keller Pils, The Velvet Hog, West Coast Pilsner, Hefeweizen, Ponderosa Pale, Hopsteppa, Hiya! and barrel-aged Silent Warrior available in draft and bottles, as well as other rotating, small batch, barrel-aged beers.

Other key players at TAPS Brewery & Barrel Room include manager Kristine “KC” Cunningham and TAPS food truck chef de cuisine Roman Jimenez.

Hours at the Brewery will be Monday-Thursday 3 p.m. – 10 p.m.; Friday 3 p.m. – midnight; Saturday 11 a.m. – midnight; Sunday 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Ample self-parking is available.

Upland’s new 13,000 square foot brewery will feature an immersive interior beer hall experience, a huge outdoor beer garden, an open kitchen, and an on-site brewery focused on innovation and barrel aging. “Expanding our brewing operations to Indy will be a perfect complement to our Bloomington-based Wood Shop Sour Ale & West Side Production Breweries. The innovation and creativity don’t stop at the brew house. Building relationships with area artists mirrors Upland’s devotion to all things local. COOP Ale Works Announces Plans to Redevelop 23rd Street Armory

July 23, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

OKLAHOMA CITY — COOP Ale Works is brewing up big plans for Oklahoma City’s historic 23rd Street Armory building. The Oklahoma Office of Management and Enterprise Services (OMES) recently accepted the company’s proposal to acquire and redevelop the armory, which includes restoring the building and creating a unique experience.“Oklahoma City is our home and we always wanted to return to the core of the city. In planning for a final home for the brewery, we wanted to find a place that is meaningful to our town and state, and gives us an opportunity to create an incredible experience,” said Daniel Mercer, co-founder of COOP Ale Works. “The Armory, with its unique history, structure and space, is the perfect fit and we believe it will become a venue that attracts visitors from across the state, country and world.”Under COOP’s proposal, the 87,000-plus-square-foot building will be purchased from the state for $600,000 and returned to its former glory with updates to the interior functionality. The exterior will be maintained to honor its unique history with modern refreshes, including updated windows, while the inside will be transformed into a bustling brewery production floor, full-service restaurant, 22-room boutique hotel, multiple event spaces, offices and meeting rooms. In total, COOP plans to dedicate $20 million to the overall project.

A 60-barrel, state-of-the-art brewhouse on the first floor will be the heart of the operation. Fermentation, conditioning, packaging and other production equipment will occupy the remainder of the 22,000-square-foot drill hall floor. More than 30,000 square feet of perimeter space surrounding the production floor will house brewery storage, offices, barrel aging, cold storage, shipping, receiving and more.

On the second floor, the east wing will become an 8,000-square-foot restaurant and taproom, with indoor and patio seating for more than 160 patrons. The full-service restaurant will serve a diverse collection of food and beverages. On the third floor of the east wing, dedicated event spaces will be available for community and private events.

A 22-room boutique hotel will tie the experience together. Hotel rooms will occupy the second and third floors of the west wing of the building with a refined lobby located on the west side of first floor to welcome guests.

The proposal also includes five acres surrounding the armory building as well as leases for two adjacent properties. The additional properties will provide substantial parking, opportunities for retail and downtown living, and green space.

Various development partners have been working alongside COOP throughout the project, including Spur Design, architecture and engineering; Smith & Pickel, general contractor; Preservation and Design Studio, historic preservation consulting; and Price Edwards, real estate and leasing.

“It’s a large and complex project, but we have assembled a team of highly-experienced development partners that we look forward to working with to create an experience and legacy that all Oklahomans can be proud of,” said Mercer.

The 23rd Street Armory, constructed in 1938, was designed by architect and Oklahoma Army National Guard Major Bryan Nolen and was built as part of the Depression-era Works Progress Administration. At the time of its original construction, it was promoted as the only armory in Oklahoma funded entirely by state funds generated from oil wells located on the Oklahoma State Capitol grounds. The three-story building served as the state’s hub for the Oklahoma National Guard and the storied 45th Infantry Division.

“The unique community role the 23rd Street Armory has long played for many Oklahomans was a driving factor in seeking redevelopment for this property. We are excited knowing COOP Ale Works’ goal is to honor and preserve this history, and we look forward to the revitalization that will breathe new life into the Oklahoma State Capitol corridor,” said Denise Northrup, OMES Director.

COOP’s plans are designed to revitalize the building, restoring it with purpose instead of repurposing it, said Mercer.

“We understand and appreciate the historical significance of the Armory. This building is filled with stories from generations of Oklahomans,” said Mercer. “Honoring them and preserving that history is incredibly important to us.”

Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase, with all proceeds benefiting the local San Diego chapter of the Surfrider Foundation. The event will feature 25+ beers on tap, local music by The Sidekicks and DJ Mike Czech, and a photo booth. Several gourmet food trucks will also be on site selling food.
