Founders Brewing Co. Announces Blushing Claus as Final 2021 Mothership Series Release

December 3, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Founders BrewingGRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Founders Brewing Co. has announced their final Mothership Series beer for the year, Blushing Claus. A festive take on Blushing Padre, this raspberry Belgian ale was aged in tequila barrels before being hit with enough cranberries and orange zest to make any mouth feel merry this holiday season. Blushing Claus presents a pleasant yet slightly aggressive tartness alongside the existing tequila and raspberry sweetness – making it the perfect beer for anyone who made the nice list this year. Blushing Claus has an ABV of 11.9%.

The Mothership Series are ultra-limited, brew team favorite beers only found in bottles at Founders’ taproom locations. Whether it’s an old standby the brewery brought out of retirement or an experimental new style, it’s sure to go quickly. Previous Mothership Series beers have included: Harvest Ale, Hazy IPA, Blushing Padre, Detroit Double IPA, Devil Dancer, French Toast Bastard, Oktoberfest, Pale Joe and Mucho Lupu.

Blushing Claus will be available on tap and for purchase in Founders’ Grand Rapids and Detroit taprooms Dec. 15 for a limited time. Pricing in the taproom will be $20/6-pack.

Oskar Blues Brewery Releases Barrel-Aged Imperial Stouts

December 2, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Oskar Blues Brewing

Longmont, Colorado – It’s Stout Season, when the beers are bigger and the ABV is, let’s say, warming; and Oskar Blues Brewery’s 2021 barrel-aged beers are the reason for the season. Barrel-Aged Ten FIDY Imperial Stout is making its seasonal return to national distribution and BA21 Vol. 7 is hitting shelves for the first time as the next iteration of OB’s ongoing barrel-aged project. Both beers are now available in limited quantities.

“Barrel-aged beers are so special because of the amount of care and work that goes into them from so many different people,” said Sara Laurienti, Oskar Blues Longmont’s Director of Brewery Operations. “The quality of our barrel-aged beer directly correlates to the time that our team puts in when it comes to brewing the beer, filling the barrels, organizing the barrel storage for blending and emptying the barrels. Barrel-aging is one of the few things that is really ‘all hands on deck’ across all departments in the brewery.”

BA21 vol. 7 (11.5% ABV) is the newest edition of Oskar Blues’ barrel-aging program, which began in 2020 and continues to produce limited release barrel-aged beers with unprecedented flavor combinations. This imperial sweet stout is brewed with graham crackers for a biscuity backbone that stands up to months of aging in whiskey barrels. Additions of rich chocolate and juicy cherry send this sucker to the sweet, sweet stratosphere.

Returning for a limited time in 2021 is Barrel-Aged Ten FIDY Imperial Stout, a 12.5% ABV juggernaut and longtime seasonal favorite at Oskar Blues. Rich FIDY flavor is polished to smooth perfection by (at least) eight months’ stay in a barrel, which imparts flavors of vanilla, oak and bourbon. During maturation, the FIDY-plus-bourbon flavors mellow into a roasty, smooth, deeply complex brew.

“My favorite part of creating barrel aged beers is how creative you can get with them. It’s really exciting when a beer you have been thinking about and working on for eighteen months finally makes it into a can,” said Laurienti.

Pelican Brewing Company Concludes Its 25th Bird-Day Collaboration Series

December 2, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

PACIFIC CITY, Oregon – Pelican Brewing Company’s yearlong 25th birthday celebration raises one last glass with the release of Bird-Day Volume IV, an innovative culinary-inspired dark ale featuring Ancho chiles. This seasonally appropriate beer integrates rich, fruity aromas, deep caramel notes, and earthy Ancho chiles to create a flavor complexity while adding a tingle of spiciness to the warming finish. Pelican collaborated with New York-based alumni Hutch Kugeman of The Culinary Institute of America to showcase Pelican’s culinary approach to creating great beers.

Collaborating on Bird-Day Volume IV with Pelican Brewmaster Darron Welch was an opportunity to bring Hutch’s culinary knowledge to the forefront of the beer creation process to create a harmony of flavors. “I always approach things with flavors of three, so three distinct flavorings,” shares Hutch. “From the malt, you get that raisin sweetness, from the yeast you get that fermentation character, from the Ancho’s you get the earthy flavor that balances it all out, to create a harmony of flavors, but also great depth in the flavors.”

ABV: 8.7%| IBU: 25 | PLATO: 19º

Additionally, this final collaboration speaks to Pelican and Darron’s passion for teaching and sharing of industry knowledge. “It feels gratifying knowing that I was able to play a small part in Hutch’s career, and some of that knowledge is being passed forward. It’s reassuring to know that the future of food arts and brewing is in good hands,” says Darron. Hutch is the Head Brewer for the Brewery at The Culinary Institute of America and teaches culinary students the art of beer and how to create culinary experiences that complement the craft beer world.

Bird-Day Volume IV concludes Pelican’s four-part alumni collaboration series featuring collaborations from prominent Pelican Alumni, including Whitney Burnside of 10 Barrel Brewing, Ben Love of Gigantic Brewing, Jason Schonemann of Steel Toe Brewing, and Hutch Kugeman of The Culinary Institute of America. For Darron, these four collaborations were just a small showing of the people who have created a permanent mark on his 25 years at Pelican Brewing. “My only regret for the Bird-Day series is that we only had four spots, and we have so many fabulous Pelican alumni. We’ll have to just do another series,” says Darron.

Bird-Day Volume IV is now available in 500 mL bottles at your local bottle shop, on draft at Pelican brewpubs, and through Pelican’s beer subscription service called the Bird-Day Box.

About Pelican Brewing Company

Pelican Brewing Company was born at the beach in 1996. Here, in front of a rundown old building at the water’s edge, stood three enthusiastic young folks whose thirst for great beer overshadowed their understanding of what it would take to build a brewery. They did it anyway. Thanks to the vision of founding owners Jeff Schons, Mary Jones and brewmaster Darron Welch, Oregon’s only beachfront brewpub became one of the state’s most popular destinations. And now, 25 years later, Pelican Brewing Company is an iconic beach brand and one of the most decorated craft breweries in Oregon. Pelican has been honored with more than 450 awards, including the prestigious 2015, 2016, 2017 Australian International Beer Awards Champion Medium International Brewery; 2014 World Beer Cup Champion Small Brewery; 2013 Great American Beer Festival Large Brewpub of the Year. Why? Pelican brews are playful, but not frivolous. Brewed with purpose, passion and a deep respect for the craft. Pelican operates brewing and brewpub facilities in Pacific City, Cannon Beach, and its state-of-the-craft brewery in Tillamook, Oregon where it brews 40,000 barrels of award-winning beer annually and distributes to six states. Pelican’s vision, its beer and values were born at the beach, where the team wakes up each day in a place that reminds them that amazing is possible. Cheers, Fellow Fanatics!

Our Mutual Friend Brewing Celebrates Nine Years

December 1, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Our Mutual FriendDENVER, Colorado – Our Mutual Friend Brewing Company (OMF) is proud to announce their 9-Year Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, December 11 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. at their taproom (2810 Larimer St. Denver, CO 80205). The party includes special releases and delicious eats from Owlbear Barbecue.

While year nine is not typically a significant year for most businesses, this anniversary is particularly meaningful for the RiNo brewery, which opened its doors in 2012.

“Though we are still in the midst of the pandemic, looking back, I recognize how truly challenging 2020 was for small businesses like us and that some were not so fortunate to make it,” says OMF Managing Partner Brandon Proff. “I feel humbled by the hard work and commitment that our employees and customers made to help us make it through—so this anniversary celebration is for them.”

To commemorate the occasion, OMF will release the following beers on their anniversary:

Fixed Blade, a Barleywine aged in Laws Whiskey Barrels for 22 months, makes a triumphant return. This behemoth of a beer, which has big vanilla and whiskey barrel characters, as well as malty, sweet caramel, toffee and butterscotch notes, clocks in at 13% ABV. Available in 16 oz. cans and on draft.

Fans of OMF’s Brett Saison, Weirding Way, will want to try the Foeder-aged version that’s dry-hopped with Strata hops. Strata Weirding Way, at 7% ABV, is an extremely smooth Saison with funky, Brett character and mixed berry aromas. Available in 750 ml. bottles and on draft.

Year Nine Double Juicy IPA is a 7.4% ABV beer that has a super soft body and hop aromas of peach, guava, orange and citrus zest from Azacca, Centennial, El Dorado and Galaxy hops. Available in four-pack 16 oz. cans and on draft.

“I’m excited for Fixed Blade to be back (one of my favorite beers we make) and to spend a weekend seeing friends that haven’t been able to make it to OMF during the pandemic,” says Proff. “At our anniversary, I’ll be reflecting and appreciating how far we have come. I am feeling optimistic about our future.”

All OMF anniversary special releases will be available beginning Dec. 11, while supplies last. Owlbear Barbecue will also be on deck serving up delicious fare.
