Oakshire Brewing’s Dark Days of February event headlined by Hellshire XII release

January 22, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Oakshire BrewingEugene and Portland –  Oregon’s Oakshire Brewing, has an established reputation of excellence in dark and strong beers since at least the original Hellshire barleywine release 12 years ago. Even before that they produced core beer Overcast Espresso Stout and were developing a strong barrel-aged program. In celebration of the unofficial stout month of February, Oakshire is holding events in Portland, Astoria, Eugene, Medford, and Seattle and Tacoma, Washington with four specialty beer releases headlined by Hellshire XXII.

In addition to the skill of their award-winning pedigree of brewers, Oakshire’s secret weapon for creating deep dark montrous beers is a direct-fired kettle which helps in producing rich and intense worts. The Dark Days of February releases showcase the range of dark flavors in bottles and cans available for pre-order and purchase at Oakshire’s taproom locations, as well as at specialty beer  retailers in Oregon, Washington, and Colorado:

Hellshire XII is an Imperial Stout aged in Elijah Craig 12 Year Bourbon Barrels. It is the 12th installment in Oakshire’s annual bourbon barrel-aged Hellshire series. 22oz Bottle, 13.5% ABV

Heart Shaped Box, last produced in 2021, is a bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Stout with  raspberries, coffee, cocoa, and vanilla beans. 22oz Bottle, 14.5% ABV

Overcast Café: Mexican Mocha is the first variation of the limited-series Café variants. This  Imperial version of the classic Overcast stout adds vanilla, cocoa nibs, cinnamon, and peppers.  16oz Can, 8.2% ABV

Visit Munich Doppelbock is a strong, dark German-style lager cold-conditioned for an ultra rewarding four months. The Visit series explores classic international pilsners and lagers. 16oz/4pk, 8.1% ABV

“We are excited for the annual release of Hellshire to return to its rightful position in the cold, dark part  of the year. Past Hellshire releases coincided with our Hellshire Day Brewfest, but that’s going to look  different going forward. This year, we’ll celebrate Hellshire XII with a lineup of taproom and retailer  events. Will the Hellshire Day Brewfest return in 2024? We’re excited to explore the possibility,” says  Hannah Child, Oakshire Marketing Director.

The Dark Days event schedule includes releases at Belmont Station in Portland on February 3rd, Bridge &  Tunnel Bottleshop in Astoria on February 9th, and Peaks & Pints in Tacoma, WA on February 16th. A  special ticketed Brunch in Hell will take place on February 5th at The Bier Stein in Eugene. There Dan  Russo, Oakshire’s Director of Brewing Operations, will release the brunch-inspired barrel-aged Imperial  Stout Brunch in Hell ’23, specially brewed for this event, which also serves as a celebration of his 10th Anniversary with Oakshire. The Brunch in Hell menu was carefully curated using Oakshire beers by The  Bier Stein’s Chef, Katie Nordgren. Tickets will go on sale online on Tuesday, 1/17 at 12pm.

New Hazy Limited Release from Sierra Nevada

January 22, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Sierra Nevada Brewing CompanyChico, CA – Sierra Nevada Brewing is kicking off 2023 with an all-new limited-edition Hazy Series release which was designed to introduce a range of unique and fresh Hazy options for beer fans to explore throughout the year. The very first iteration in this promising series Sierra Nevada Juicy Little Thing is a 6.5% ABV juice-bomb that does not dissapoint. Crafted using a specialized yeast strain and Sterling, Citra, El Dorado, and Mosaic hops, this new limited release sports bright stone fruit, apricot, tropical fruit, and citrus notes that linger.

“What’s exciting about the Limited Hazy Series is that we’re selecting hazy IPA variants with interesting and unique flavor profiles and they’re each only available for a limited time,” said Kyle Ingram, Brand Director at Sierra Nevada Brewing. “Drinkers who love the hazy IPA beer style are definitely going to love what we’re doing because they’ll get to try something fresh and different each time we release anew beer in the series, which will happen about three times a year.”

About Sierra Nevada’s Ken Grossman

As a toddler, he took things apart faster than his mom could keep up—the toaster, the washer, outlet covers. Tinkering turned into inventing, and learning in school didn’t compare to education in a backyard shop. Ken fell for science, though, thanks to the father of a close friend. Visiting their house, Ken always saw and smelled curious bubbling jugs: homebrew.

Elysian Releases and Transforms Space Dust IPA

January 22, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Elysian BrewingSeattle, WA – Way back in 2014, Elysian Brewing transitioned a popular release from their Manic IPA Series and made it available all year round. And as with many heritage releases that have been available for many years it’s sometimes unfairly gets overlooked. Elysian Space Dust IPA is an 8.2% ABV blast of Chinook, Citra, and Amarillo hops that’s well worth revisiting.

Space Dust balances bitterness with a sweetness of hop flavors. Grapefruit, mango, and orange aromas with a medium body and a dry finish.
We opened our doors in 1996 when bold art and music defined Seattle.

First brewed in 2012 as a one-off at our innovation brewery, Elysian Fields. Name originates from the brew day, where leftover Galaxy hop dust was spontaneously thrown into the brew, hence Space Dust. The beer grew in popularity within our pubs, was bottled in our Manic Series, and eventually became the #1 beer in our portfolio. Galaxy hops were eventually replaced by Amarillo.

About Elysian Brewing

Over the past 25 years, we’ve carried this same spirit in the way we brew our beer – shaking up classic styles, using unusual ingredients, and learning from experimentation. We push creativity beyond the brews. Each beer label is made by our in-house team who pull inspiration from design, photography, clay, paint, needlepoint, and even the occasional tattoo.

Come chase down the rabbit hole with us.

‘Light the Beam’ Beer: Brewery selling out turning dunks into Double IPA

January 22, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Moksa BreweryROCKLIN, Calif. — Moksa Brewery first crafted their ‘Light the Beam’ double IPA in December and sold out in three hours.

A second release, Saturday, led to dozens waiting outside the brewery doors before they opened.

“It was actually very surprising, because we’ve really never sold out of a can the day of,” said Derek Gallanosa, Head Brewer at Moksa.

The ‘Light the Beam’ double IPA is ‘flavor packed’ according to brewers.

Its namesake, first pierced the sky on Oct. 29 when the Sacramento Kings took their first win of the season against the Miami Heat.

“Beer brings people together, the Kings bring people together, why not put that together all in one package,” said Gallanosa.

Moksa is preparing a third release of their ‘Light the Beam’ brew for March, and their team is already preparing a playoff celebratory brew for June.

About Moksa Brewing

Moksa (or Moksha) is a term in Hinduism and Hindu philosophy. This term refers to various forms of emancipation, liberation, and release. This is our mantra, the entire reason behind the name Moksa Brewing Co. Lakewood Brewing Company Releases New Nitro Stout

January 22, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Lakewood Brewing Company(Dallas, TX) – Lakewood Brewing is a family-owned, independent craft brewery making seriously fun beer just outside of Dallas… Lakewood exploded onto the DFW brewing scene in 2012 and became famous for its Temptress Imperial Milk Stout the best-selling stout in all of Texas. And they’ve a new Temptress variation which is outstanding. (especially if you like Nitros).

From its thick milk chocolate head to its rich complex body Lakewood Nitro Temptress is a 9.1% ABV Imperial Milk Stout with an even creamier mouthfeel than usual thanks to a smart infusion of nitrogen gas that enriches everything.

About Lakewood Brewing

Wim Bens graduated from SMU in Dallas when craft beer was still in it’s infancy. His beer journey began with the search for a taste from Belgium in Texas. That search led him to discover American craft breweries that were pushing beer boundaries. During that time Wim moved to East Dallas and found a part of the city that is full of creative people putting their energy back into the community. At LBC, we strive to create the highest quality beers by exploring new and exciting styles while staying true to the art and precision of craft brewing. We handcraft small batch beers that are full of unique, exciting flavors and reflect the timelessness, creativity, and energetic fun. It’s where we brewed our first beer, where my family calls home, and where Lakewood Brewing Company was born.

GREATER GOOD IMPERIAL BREWING RELEASES FOUR NEW BIG BEERS

January 21, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Greater Good Imperial Brewing CompanyWORCESTER, MA. – Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company, America’s First All-Imperial Brewery, kicked off the new year with four significant beer announcements. These releases form part of a key component of the brewery’s strategy in 2023 to leverage their reputation as the premier provider of all-imperial beers with an eye towards ongoing innovation in imperialized styles.

BIGG Thaw is a brand new seasonal beer, which will be available from January-March. BIGG Thaw is an Imperial Cold IPA, a style that has steadily gained popularity over the past year and a half. Fermented at a lower temperature to create a light, crisp body and hopped with Citra and El Dorado hops, BIGG Thaw is designed to challenge the notions of what an IPA can be.

“We’re really excited about BIGG Thaw, especially as it relates to our big focus on innovation this year,” said Colleen Quinn, CEO of Greater Good. “That beer really embodies two of our key goals: pushing the boundaries of what an IPA can be, and introducing customers to imperialized styles of beers that they might never have encountered before. Plus, it might just be my new favorite beer!”

BIGG Thaw joins Absolute Clarity, launched as a year-round beer just this month, to offer new flavor experiences for IPA loyalists. Absolute Clarity was the result of a fan-sourced taste test to determine the best of two potential recipes. Like BIGG Thaw, the appearance of the aptly-named Absolute Clarity is clear and beer has a crisp character to it, but the flavors are much more reminiscent of a traditional West Coast IPA, with combinations of juicy grapefruit and pine.

Another new year-rounder is Bombshell, a smooth, refreshing imperial blonde ale that features a mild maltiness and notes of melon, pineapple, and zesty tangerine. Bombshell is an integral part of the story that Greater Good plans to tell this year around innovation in imperializing traditionally low ABV style beers.

Pomegranate Tangerine is the newest addition to the Greater Good 55 Funk family, a series of imperial sour ales that was launched off the success of the original Funk Daddy, which received a silver medal at the 2021 Great American Beer Festival.

About Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company

Greater Good Imperial Brewing Company was founded as America’s First All-Imperial Brewery in 2016. Located in Worcester, MA, Greater Good brews a variety of high octane – yet smooth-drinking IPAs, porters, stouts, and ales. Brewed with dedication to crafting excellent beers that range from 8-12% ABV range and available in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Hampshire.

Double Mountain Brewery releases Never Too Loud Schwarzbier

January 21, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Double Mountain BreweryIt’s dark lager season! December and January have seemingly become the seasonal time to release European-style dark lagers that have just a little bit more mouthfeel than a pilsner with more chocolate and roast to remind you it’s still winter. Hood River and Portland, Oregon’s Double Mountain Brewery is the latest to come in with their take of German-style Schwarzbier called “Never Too Loud!”

More from a press release:

The Schwarzbier is one of the oldest German styles of Lager. It’s dark in color, but light and crisp on the tongue. For Never Too Loud, we used a yeast strain of German and Australian decent, fermenting it low, slow, and clean, accentuating the malt and yeast profiles. We experimented with a new malt: Black Prinz and Midnight Wheat from Briess. It sheds the husk, giving us color without the astringency, and lending some lovely head retention.

The hops play second fiddle, balancing and adding subtle nuances to complement the yeast and malts. It’s low in ABV (per style) and drinks light for a darker beer. Hold it up to the light. It’s fecking gorgeous. The darkness gives way to a rich ruby hue. There’s some toffee and baked bread, a Midas touch of dry baker’s chocolate, and an easy, crispy boi finish. A dark beer that drinks like a lager. Beertender, I think I’ll have another.

Never Too Loud Schwarzbier

4.6% ABV 25 BU

Well, we followed the rules until the knob broke. This dark German lager carries aromas of espresso bean and rustic bread that riff hard over a clean biscuit and baker’s chocolate chord progression. This one looks like a porter and drinks like a lager. In the immortal words of Danko Jones, it’s never too loud!

About Double Mountain Brewery

Double Mountain Brewery & Cidery was established in 2007 in the heart of downtown Hood River, OR. Founder, Matt Swihart, opened the brewery with a clear mission: make great beer for craft beer fans. The unique location of Double Mountain provides the use of pure and clean glacial water for beers and ciders, while also taking advantage of regionally grown hops. Reusable bottles allow customers to partake in a softer environmental footprint, affirming they are part of a sustainable future. Double Mountain may be found on tap and in bottles throughout the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia.

Michigan’s Atwater Brewery releases IPA created by artificial intelligence

January 21, 2023 by Dustin Scoggins

Atwater BreweryDETROIT – Michigan breweries release beer made with everything these days.

But chances are you haven’t tried a beer made like this.

Created by Atwater Brewery in Detroit, Artificial Intelligence IPA is a brew made completely by an artificial intelligence software. The 6.5% IPA is made with a blend of Centennial, Citra, and Amarillo hops, which results in tropical and citrus flavors and aromas.

“I can’t wait for everyone to try one of the first artificial intelligence designed beers,” Atwater Quality Manager Joe Platt, who came up with the idea, said. “AI technology has the potential to impact and revolutionize many industries, including the brewing industry, in the future.”

“We asked the AI to create an IPA recipe for us and it was able to create a recipe to the scale of our brew system and created an AI-designed, human-brewed IPA. I’m excited for Atwater to be on the forefront of innovative brewing. We have more ideas and new beers coming in the very near future.”

Atwater will be charging $2.001 for each pint in homage to HAL 9000 from Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 film “2001: A Space Odyssey,” on Thursday.

The beer will then be sold exclusively on tap at Atwater’s taprooms in Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park, and Grand Rapids.

“As far as we know, this is the first beer of its kind in Michigan,” Atwater President Katy McBrady said. “We are fortunate to have a team of innovators, like Joe on site in Detroit, and I encourage you to keep your eyes peeled for more great news and brews in 2023. Cheers.”

About Atwater Brewery

Atwater was founded in 1997 in Detroit’s Riverfront District. Originally known for its German lager styles, the brewery has expanded to include more contemporary styles in recent years.
