Tröegs Releases Grand Cacao Stout

February 12, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Tröegs BrewingHERSHEY, Pa. — Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of its newest year-round beer, Grand Cacao Chocolate Stout. It joins the brewery’s lineup of iconic beers such as Perpetual IPA, Troegenator, Sunshine Pilsner, Haze Charmer and DreamWeaver Wheat.

Four Peaks Brewing Co. Releases Rosé Our Way

February 12, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Four Peaks BrewingPHOENIX — Four Peaks Brewing Co., Arizona’s largest brewery, announced today the release of Rosé Our Way, a beer specifically brewed to mimic the flavors—and appearance—of Rosé wine.

“Rosé Our Way is our attempt to bring an end to the ‘beer or wine’ debate we see happening at dinner tables nationwide every night,” says Andy Ingram, Four Peaks’ co-founder and head brewer. “Some people prefer beer with dinner. Some people prefer wine. So we said, ‘Why not both?’”

To achieve a wine-like flavor, Four Peaks’ brewers designed Rosé Our Way with Mosaic, Hallertau Blanc and Southern Passion hops, which are known to exhibit berry, melon, and grape flavors similar to those found in Rosé wine. They then added cranberry juice for a hint of tartness and an alluring blush of color.

“It really captures that bright, fruity flavor of Rosé, but with its high carbonation, it’s an even more refreshing drink for spring,” Ingram says.

Another advantage Rosé Our Way has over its namesake wine: The beer is relatively low in carbohydrates, at just 5 grams per 12-ounce bottle.

Rosé Our Way is available now in bottled six-packs throughout Arizona as well as in select parts of California, Nevada, and New Mexico. A spring seasonal, it’ll be available until early summer. Fans can check availability near them using Four Peaks’ Beer Finder at fourpeaks.com/finder.

Cascade Brewing Releases Cosmosaic and Blueberry

February 12, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Cascade BrewingPORTLAND, Ore. — Cascade Brewing has announced two new releases coming out today: Cosmosaic, a brand new project, and Blueberry 2020, a longtime favorite.

Cosmosaic features sour blond ale aged in oak barrels for up to 10 months followed by a late addition of Mosaic hops, bringing hoppy harmony to the cosmic complexity of sour beer. The sessionable ale, which comes in at 4.4% ABV, is packaged in 12-ounce cans.

Blueberry features a blend of sour triple and blond ales aged in Pinot Noir barrels for up to two years with fresh blueberries proudly grown in Oregon’s bountiful Willamette Valley. As one of the United States’ top blueberry producers, Oregon is home to some of the best blueberries grown anywhere in the world. Cascade worked directly with local growers to select the finest, most ripe fruit of the season. Blueberry is available in 250ml slim cans, in 500ml glass bottles and in draft kegs. The beer ranges between 7.8% and 8.3% ABV, depending on packaging.

Both products will be distributed through Cascade Brewing’s distribution network and are available now at the brewery’s two Portland pubs: Cascade Brewing Barrel House at 939 SE Belmont St. and The Lodge at Cascade Brewing at 7424 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy.

About Cascade Brewing

Founded in Portland, Oregon in 1998, Cascade Brewing is a pioneer of the sour beer renaissance, innovating the Northwest Sour Ale in 2006. The brewery’s portfolio of distinctive sour ales features fruit-forward, barrel-aged ales with complex flavors and aromas derived from the acid, the fruit and the residual flavors present in the aging barrels. An emphasis on year-to-year variation captures the unique subtleties of each year’s fruit growing season, leading sour beer connoisseurs around the world to seek out Cascade’s Northwest Sour Ales. The brewery also brews a broad range of non-sour styles with the same level of quality and creativity that has become synonymous with the Cascade Brewing brand. 21st Amendment Brewery Announces SOMA Hard Seltzer

February 12, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

21st Amendment BrewerySan Francisco, Calif. — Friday, January 22, 2021 — San Francisco is renowned for empowering originality. The South of Market (SoMA) district, a mix of urban grit and stunning sightlines of the San Francisco Bay, is also the home to the 21st Amendment Brewery’s beloved 2nd Street brewpub. Founders Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan pay homage to SoMA and the restless creativity bustling at all corners of the City (and urban meccas nationwide) with the spring 2021 national release of handcrafted seltzers for free-spirited individuals living life against the grain: SOMA Hard Seltzer (100 calories, 2g carbs, 0g sugar, 4.6% ABV).

Masterminds of beloved fruit beers (i.e. Hell or High Watermelon), the 21st Amendment’s SOMA Hard Seltzer carries on their infatuation with watermelon and other enticing flavors such as Black Cherry, Guava & Passion Fruit, and Mango. Shaun O’Sullivan (Co-Founder and Brewmaster) brews the new line of seltzers with their craft roots front and center and with the same level of innovation as their acclaimed beer portfolio.

“Brewed to strength, we’re using a natural fermentation of grain-based sugars and champagne yeast for our seltzers, which really shows our dedication to the handcrafted nature of SOMA. For six months, we brewed small batches to get the flavors correct. SOMA Hard Seltzer is NOT made with neutral spirits, and then diluted with water. Many hard seltzers made that way have a metallic and artificial taste. When you crack open a can of SOMA Hard Seltzer, you can taste the hard work that’s gone into each distinct flavor,” says Shaun O’Sullivan, Co-Founder and Brewmaster.

SOMA Hard Seltzer has skyrocketed to the #1 Local Craft Seltzer in Major Northern California Grocery Chains (Nielsen) since its exclusive release to the Northern California marketplace in June 2020. The hard seltzer category finished 2020 up 155% (Goldman Sachs) with projected $2.7 billion (Nielsen) in sales.

SOMA Hard Seltzer will be available in 6-packs as well as 12-can variety packs in all 32 states where 21st Amendment distributes. For more information and to find some using their beer finder, please visit www.21st-Amendment.com.

Montavilla Brew Works Releases Lovin’ Oregon

February 12, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Montavilla Brew WorksPORTLAND, Ore.—Feb. 11, 2021—Montavilla Brew Works (MBW) has announced the canning of a new West Coast IPA that celebrates living in Oregon and coincides with the state’s 161st birthday. Lovin’ Oregon was brewed in collaboration with Heart in Oregon, a Portland company whose sticker featuring a green heart in the center of the state is ubiquitous in the Northwest.

Lovin’ Oregon is a West Coast IPA brewed with pilsner and pale malts that support a medium-light body, easy drinkability and a dry finish. Falconer’s Flight hops impart tropical and fruity flavors while maintaining a restrained yet suitable bitterness. This IPA is dry hopped with Citra and Strata hops with aromas of grapefruit, lime, tropical fruit and dank herb. The beer comes in at 6.5% ABV.

“This collaboration between MBW and Heart in Oregon is what makes this job so rewarding,” said Michael Kora, MBW founder and head brewer. “We’ve always enjoyed partnering with other local businesses that share our vision of keeping things local, serving the community, and supporting each other in good times and bad. 2020 was an incredibly challenging year, particularly for small businesses like ours that had to pivot their business model to accommodate Covid-related safety protocols. It made sense to collaborate with Heart in Oregon, not only to celebrate Oregon’s 161st birthday but to celebrate surviving 2020 in the resilient state we live in.”

Chris Bucci, the founder of Heart in Oregon, explained that since February 14 is both Valentine’s Day and Oregon’s statehood birthday, he’s been looking for partnerships with Oregon-based companies whose products are a natural fit for release on that date. “Teaming up with MBW made perfect sense—both our companies are headquartered in Portland’s Montavilla neighborhood and Michael and I both live nearby. And after the year we’ve all experienced, we’re excited to share a beer with our fellow Oregonians.”

Added Kora, “What’s exciting about this collaboration is that everyone recognizes Chris’ stickers—they’re everywhere, from vehicle bumpers to beer kegerators to bicycle helmets. Seeing his popular image on our cans of IPA and distributing them across the state is a real treat for us and reminds us of how fortunate we are to be in Oregon.”

Oregon’s official birthday is February 14, but one-off IPA Lovin’ Oregon will be available starting today until supplies run out. Prepay and pickup or home delivery orders can be placed online with touchless transactions available at the brewery.

CANarchy Craft Brewery Has Healthy Growth In 2020, Plans for Success in 2021

February 10, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

CANarchy Craft Brewery Has Healthy Growth In 2020, Plans for Success in 2021Longmont, Colo. (February 10, 2021) CANarchy Craft Brewery Collective continued to grow in 2020 by leveraging the platform it has strengthened over the last several years, and through diversification of its portfolio across brands and key U.S. regions. Despite encountering many unforeseen challenges and obstacles during a difficult year, the collective’s successes were driven by fresh innovation, strength in the seltzer space as a craft segment leader, variety pack victories and a robust digital strategy. These initiatives and many others boosted sales to wholesale (STW) from 480,000 barrels in 2019 to 490,000 in 2020, an increase of 10,000 barrels, or 2%. The collective also grew sales to retail (STR) at a rate greater than shipments at 5%, indicating that velocity at retail was strong.

2020 saw the following developments in $ trend for IRI scan data for Total U.S. Multi-Outlet and Convenience:

An increase within CANarchy’s beer portfolio of 18%, outperforming total craft trends of +9%

An increase of 33% when factoring in incremental hard seltzer brand growth

All CANarchy breweries up YTD compared to 2019

Cigar City Brewing increased 27%

Oskar Blues Brewery increased 53% including seltzer

Three Weavers Brewing Company increased 67%

Strong performance in home markets, including Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Colorado, Utah, Michigan and Southern California

Chris Russell, Chief Commercial Officer, said, “While the past year presented a significant number of challenges for our business, we were able to continue to build momentum and create growth by leveraging our diversified brand portfolio that ultimately tapped into what the consumer was looking for during a tumultuous time. 2020 was a year in which we strengthened our processes, our productive capabilities and most importantly, our key partnerships at the wholesale and retail levels. We believe that we are well positioned to build on this momentum in 2021 as a strong contributor to category growth through strong core brands, a robust innovation pipeline and an effective go-to-market strategy.”

Leadership in Hard Seltzer Space

In 2018, CANarchy became one of the first national craft breweries to produce hard seltzer. CANarchy continues to be a strong craft player in the seltzer category, with brands including Wild Basin Hard Seltzer by Oskar Blues, Blind Lemon Seltzer by Deep Ellum; Grandeur Peak Spiked Sparkling Water by Squatters; and Clear Coast Fresh Hard Seltzer by Perrin. Wild Basin grew by 334%, increasing its share of Total Seltzer by 44% versus 2019. The Berry Mix Pack ranked #9 among new variety 12-pack entries in 2020, and the brand continued to innovate with the introduction of Cocktail Mix Pack in October. Blind Lemon increased by 694% in 2020, ranking as the #5 local Hard Seltzer in Texas Multi-Outlet and Convenience. Grandeur Peak currently occupies the #2 spot in local seltzer in Utah Multi-Outlet and Convenience, with 32% growth in 2020. Clear Coast is the #2 local seltzer in Michigan Food.

Cigar City Brewing and Three Weavers have launched exciting new entries into the seltzer space in Q1 2021 – Cigar City Seltzer launched at the beginning of February across the Southeast, with expansion throughout the east coast to follow; and Surfwood Clean Hard Seltzer is available at Three Weavers’ Inglewood taproom. Also in February, Deep Ellum Brewing Company released Blind Lemon Variety Mix Pack, including new Blind Peach, Blind Berry, Blind Lime and original Blind Lemon flavors; and Grandeur Peak released two new flavors. Starting at the end of Q2, Wild Basin will roll out with refreshed branding. The new design maintains the colorful packaging and unique branding that Wild Basin is known for, and incorporates a new font inspired by classic National Park signs. CANarchy also plans to launch VII by CANarchy, a 7% ABV seltzer in single-serve 16 oz. cans, targeted primarily at the convenience segment with the objective of capturing new consumers and new occasions.

New Beer Innovation

Cigar City Brewing’s Jai Low IPA was one of the most successful year-round craft brands to hit the market last fall, finishing second to Sierra Dankful IPA in the last 13 weeks of 2020, and performing at the top of the Florida market. Florida Man Double IPA, also by Cigar City Brewing, earned the #2 New Double/Imperial IPA spot in the country. New Hazy IPAs performed well across the collective, with Oskar Blues’ Thick Haze IPA securing a #5 spot among New Hazy IPAs in Colorado Multi-Outlet and Convenience; Three Weavers’ Cloud City Hazy IPA among the Top 10 Hazy IPAs in Los Angeles Food and Perrin’s Call Me Hazy IPA the #1 New Hazy IPA in Michigan Food.

CANarchy Moves Into Recovery Beverage Category

Revitalyte joined the collective in December and was successfully introduced in approximately 20 test markets in 2020. The initial distribution build and pull through velocity have surpassed expectations and show a promising future as availability increases through the US. Availability should reach the collective’s entire distribution footprint by the end of Q2. The addition of Revitalyte gives the already diverse CANarchy portfolio new reach into the growing non-alc recovery beverage category.

Variety Pack Victories

The CANarchy Mix Pack, a Top 10 IPA Mix Pack, led variety packs in $ growth trend versus 2019; and Oskar Blues CANundrum Mixed Pack and Cigar City Brewing Mix Pack rank among the Top 20 Variety packs. Mix packs also performed well locally. The Deep Ellum MixTape Mix Pack is among the Top 20 Variety 12-packs in Texas Multi-Outlet and Convenience and has increased by 39% since 2019; and the Wasatch Party In a Box and Squatters Session Sampler packs ranked #2 and #3, respectively, among Variety 12-packs in Utah Multi-Outlet and Convenience.

Digital Strategy

Safe practices during the Covid-19 pandemic meant pivoting away from traditional events and samplings to focus heavily on digital marketing efforts. Digital strategy included expanding scope outside of owned markets, curating wider audiences, developing nuanced digital targets and learning from one campaign to the next. Detailed targeting ensures that potential beer and seltzer drinkers are introduced to beverages that suit their interests, and CANarchy executed on multiple delivery service campaigns to be at the forefront of mass user adoption to those platforms, seeing immediate results.

CANarchy was able to track more than 40 million visits to chain retailers’ store locations where their digital ads were a part of the path to purchase. The ads use compelling creative content to reinforce brand stories and cultivate view rates well above industry benchmarks. Investments in digital marketing will continue into 2021, planned to increase over 200% across the collective in order to further track path to purchase, while providing transparency with distributor partners.

Investment in Growth

CANarchy is currently investing in additional capacity across its facility footprint to support future growth. Investments include new fermentation and brite tanks in Longmont, CO, to increase seltzer capacity to over 200,000 barrels per year; incremental fermenters in Salt Lake City, UT, Grand Rapids, MI and Los Angeles, CA, to increase beer capacity; and mix packing capability in Austin, TX, Brevard, NC, Tampa, FL and Los Angeles, CA.

Portland’s Ecliptic Brewing and Wayfinder Beer Collaborate on Cold IPA

February 10, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Cold IPA brewed by Portland's Ecliptic BrewingPORTLAND, Ore. — Ecliptic Brewing is pairing up with Wayfinder Beer to brew a Cold IPA. Shipping February 17th in 16-ounce cans and draft, this will be Ecliptic’s first Cosmic Collaboration with Wayfinder and the first of 2021.

“Cold IPA” is a newer term, and the style aims to feature a crisper IPA. John Harris, Ecliptic’s Owner and Brewmaster teamed up with Wayfinder’s Brewmaster, Kevin Davey, to create Ecliptic’s take on the style. The beer is brewed with Pilsner malt and lager yeast and features Pacific Sunrise and Talus hops. Says Davey, “Cold IPA is our attempt at making a ‘Wester than West Coast’ IPA’, but it’s not a lager… it’s more of a crossover style”. Adjuncts help lighten the body and increase drinkability. In Davey’s words, the result is a “very clean, dry and extremely hop forward” beer.

“I’m excited to work with Kevin and the Wayfinder team,” says Harris. “They really embraced this style and have made a few Cold IPAs already, so we’re stoked to team up and see what we can brew at Ecliptic. It’s fun to try something different.”

Ecliptic + Wayfinder Cold IPA will be released in draft and 16-ounce cans throughout Ecliptic Brewing’s distribution network on February 17th. An official virtual release party will be held on Zoom on February 25th from 5:30-6PM, with John Harris, Kevin Davey and Charlie Devereux in attendance. Visit Ecliptic’s website or Facebook event page for up-to-date details on this release.

About Ecliptic + Wayfinder Cold IPA

DESTIHL Brewery Grows Volume by 25% in 2020

February 9, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

DESTIHL BrewingNormal, IL – February 5, 2021 – DESTIHL Brewery grew its production volume by an impressive 25% in 2020, despite the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic.

While draft beer sales plummeted 47% in 2020 due to government restrictions and closures of on-premise retailer accounts beginning in mid-March, this reduction in draft was more than offset by 30% growth in DESTIHL’s packaged (canned) beer sales, which represented 87% of its product mix last year. Consistent with those trends, while there was a 42% decline in on-premise sales in 2020, off-premise sales grew by 37% in 2020 compared to 2019 and accelerated to 56% growth in Q3-Q4 2020 versus the Q3-Q4 2019.

DESTIHL’s growth was led by a 55% increase in production of its industry-changing, year-round offerings in its WiLD Sour Series, which was one of the first sour beer series introduced in cans back in 2014. Within this series, its original flagship, Here Gose Nothin’®, grew in volume by 29%, Synchopathic® Dry-Hopped Sour Ale grew by 28%, Lynnbrook® (a Raspberry Berliner-style Weisse) grew by a lesser 18% given greater seasonality impacts, and its Flanders Red grew by a whopping 62%. However, it was DESTIHL’s Wild Pack™, a variety 12-pack of Here Gose Nothin’, Synchopathic, Flanders Red and a ‘Wild Card’ mystery fruited seasonal, which led the pack with an incredible volume increase of 143% in 2020 versus 2019. Growth continues to gain momentum for the Wild Pack as well, with volume increasing by 157% in Q3 & Q4 of 2020 versus the prior year.

Also accounting for much of DESTIHL’s growth in 2020 was its rapidly growing DeadHead® IPA Series, which grew by 31% compared to 2019. This series consists mostly of rotating Hazy IPA’s, including Touch of Haze®, Drivin’ that Haze®, Haze of the Dead® and Extended Jam®, with more brands to come. In addition to great package design, the strong growth of this brand is due to the awesome liquid, quality and consistency of these beers and that they have a stable, authentic haze and longer shelf-life, enabling them to be distributed throughout DESTIHL’s 37-state footprint and even internationally to Sweden. Indeed, its Extended Jam was the #1 trending beer globally for a time in 2020 on Untappd®. Building on the success of this series, the brewery recently announced the release this month of its new year-round SoundBoard® Lo-Cal Hazy IPA, a remarkably refreshing craft beer having all the aroma and flavor that one wants in an IPA, but with only 4% ABV, 5g of carbs and 99 calories per 12oz serving, without sacrificing mouthfeel.

About DESTIHL Brewery:

DESTIHL opened its gastrobrewpub™ (DESTIHL Restaurant & Brew Works) in Normal, Illinois, in November 2007, where the company focuses on both artisan food & beers. The company’s original production brewery in Bloomington, IL commenced operations in May 2013, but production was moved to its new 47,000sf Brewery & Beer Hall in Normal, IL, which opened to the public in May 2017. DESTIHL Brewery combines centuries-old, global brewing traditions and new American craft brewing ingenuity & artisanship to produce a wide array of award-winning beers for every palate.
