October 9, 2022 by Dow Scoggins

2022 Great American Beer Festival Brewery of the Year Awards:

The 2022 Great American Beer Festival (GABF), held in Denver, Colorado, marked its 40th anniversary as the nation’s premier beer competition and festival. Organized by the Brewers Association, the event celebrated the finest craft breweries in the United States, with the Brewery of the Year awards recognizing excellence across various production size categories. These awards, determined by points from medals won (gold: 6 points, silver: 5 points, bronze: 4 points), highlighted breweries that demonstrated consistent quality and innovation in their craft.

The 2022 GABF competition was the most competitive to date, with 9,904 entries from 2,154 breweries judged across 98 beer categories and 177 styles, including Collaboration and Pro-Am competitions. A panel of 235 beer experts from seven countries evaluated the entries over nine days, awarding 300 medals to 268 breweries. The Brewery of the Year awards were given in seven categories based on brewery size (measured by annual barrel production) and one for brewery groups, reflecting the diversity of the U.S. craft beer industry.

Chayla Hope Announces Beer Collaboration

October 8, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Chayla CLEVELAND, Ohio – Cleveland-based powerhouse Chayla Hopehas announced the launch of a two-beer collaboration with Saucy Brew Works. The first, Damn, Feelings, named for Hope’s forthcoming debut solo LP, is a super-fruited Imperial Hazy IPA with pink guava, apricot, and blood orange. At  8% ABV,it is sure to have tasters “in their feelings.” The second is called Chase The Pain, a wheated ale brewed with mango habanero.

At 3 pm ET on Saturday, October 29th, Hope will host a public album listening and beer tasting party at Saucy Brew Works’ Ohio City Brewpub. The beer will be available on tap at their Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, Pinecrest, and Sandusky locations, along with select Northeast Ohio concert venues and retailers, throughout the winter and spring.

Hope recently unleashed “Long Way,” the latest single from the vinyl-presser-turned-pop-star’s debut record, out digitally on October 28th. “Long Way” is a triumphant funk pop tribute to the New Jack Swing era mixed by three-time GRAMMY Award nominee Andrew Wuepper (Beyoncé, Rihanna, Katy Perry).

“It’s about the feeling of impermanence you sometimes get growing and experiencing life with someone, knowing and eventually telling them it might not last forever,” Hope explains.

“Long Way” follows the release of “High” and Hope’s partnership with Shway Papers for her own Chayla Hope-branded rolling papers, “Love In Lo-Fi,” “Falling,” and “Forget me Not,” mixed by 10-time GRAMMY award winner Josh Gudwin (Bad Bunny, Justin Bieber, Dua Lipa).

Making a name for herself in Cleveland’s music scene pressing vinyl at Gotta Groove Records and collaborating with up-and-coming producer Jesty Beatz (aka Holy Mattress Money), Hope’s sophisticated take on the sounds of the ‘80s and ‘90s recalls the influence of Kate Bush, Whitney Houston, Annie Lennox, and Robyn, marrying inventive arrangements with an impressive range and infectious spirit.

Throughout her life, Chayla has had to overcome obstacles like heartbreak and trauma by dressing up, performing, and powering through by sheer force of her artistic and creative vision. She has long been fascinated by the juxtaposition of happy music masking sad lyrics, exploring the complicated nature of human experience through its most common facet: our feelings.

A proud member of the LGBTQIA+ community who found her performance identity doing drag, it’s no surprise Chayla was selected to sing the theme song for Care Bears: Unlock The Magicand has numerous features in the show’s soundtrack and merchandise, embodying its core themes of empowerment, inclusion, and self-understanding through her music.

White Castle and Evil Genius Beer Company Partner on New Limited Edition IPA

October 8, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

White CastlePHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania – Philadelphia-based Evil Genius Beer Company has unveiled their most craveable partnership yet as they announce a new limited edition beer, It Hits Different, with the iconic fast-food brand, White Castle.

Evil Genius has made a national name for itself with beers that tap into the cultural zeitgeist and with collaborations with some of the biggest brands across the country including Jameson Irish Whiskey, Miller High Life, and Auntie Anne’s. Now Evil Genius has partnered with White Castle, home to The Original Slider®,  America’s first fast-food hamburger chain, since 1921, and the category leader in frozen Sliders, through its retail division, which celebrates 35 years this year.

It Hits Different is a 6.5% ABV Tangerine IPA brewed with the new, exciting Sabro Hop as well as classic Centennial Hops to celebrate White Castle’s recent hundredth birthday and underscore the brand’s duality of innovation and long standing heritage. With subtle bitterness from the beer’s unique hop profile countered with a pleasant, light tangerine sweetness, It Hits Different was developed to be the perfect partner to White Castle’s signature sliders. The cheeky name is a nod to the two companies’ legacies as tastemakers, creating a product that is one-of-a-kind and uniquely satisfying–there’s nothing else like it.

“Nostalgia is such a big part of our brand and with White Castle’s over one hundred year legacy it just seemed like a perfect fit to partner with them to create a beer that is as memorable as it is tasty,” said Evil Genius Co-Founder, Trevor Hayward.

“Evil Genius knows a thing or two about thinking original–so when they approached us on the idea of partnering on the It Hits Different White Castle-inspired beer, it was easy to raise our glasses and say cheers,” said Lynn Blashford, CMO, White Castle.

It Hits Different will be available starting October 3rd in stores throughout Evil Genius’ distribution footprint including DE, MD, MI, NJ, OH, PA, VA and RI. It will be available in cans for beer and retail stores, and kegs (sixtels and halves) for bars and restaurants. The recommended price for a six pack can vary by market, but will be around $11.99.

To kick off the release, you can also look forward to a launch party at the brewery in Philadelphia on Friday, September 30th from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. The first 200 attendees will receive a complimentary can of the new collaboration beer. This free event will feature exclusive It Hits Different branded swag, raffle prizes, and more.

Brandgenuity, the licensing agency for White Castle, brokered the partnership and is supporting the program rollout.

Double Barrel Aged Shadowman Releases for GABF

October 7, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

River North BreweryDENVER, Colorado – When the seasons change and temperatures drop, the fanatical stout brewers at River North Brewery emerge with their deepest and darkest malty concoctions. For the first time ever, the “motor-oil thick” imperial stout, Shadowman, has been double-barrel-aged, making it thicker, sweeter, and more complex in all the right ways. On Saturday, October 8th, the “motor-oil thick” Double Barrel Aged Shadowman will be available on draft and in 375ml bottles at both River North Brewery taprooms, just in time for the Great American Beer Fest.

Shadowman is just one part of the five-beer seasonal set of barrel-aged beers that also includes God Complex, Father Time, Last Guardian, and the newest addition, Dark Sorceress, an imperial porter. Shadowman evokes deep flavors with great aromas and an exceptional barrel presence. Dark, roasty malts abound in this storied brew, evoking flavors of bittersweet cocoa, toasted nuts, and caramel bourbon undertones. The beer began its journey first in Kentucky Bourbon barrels, followed by Colorado Single Malt barrels. The barrels impart rich, toasted oak and vanilla undertones along with the essence of the spirits that formerly rested on the wood. This truly is a beer meant for sipping and savoring clocking in, at 18.3% ABV.

Since Shadowman’s first release back in 2016 River North has continued to test the limits with its barrel-aging program and ever-stronger brewery.
