Firestone Walker Releases Nectaron Hazy IPA in Mixed Pack

April 7, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Firestone Walker BrewingPaso Robles, Calif — Firestone Walker’s pacesetting pursuit of New Zealand hops reaches new heights with Nectaron hazy IPA—the latest single-hop release from the brewery’s Propagator Series, available exclusively in the latest “Crafted Thru Hops” IPA mixed pack.

The Crafted Thru Hops mixed pack featuring Nectaron IPA rolls out to all Firestone Walker markets starting this week. This new mixed pack—12 x 12-ounce cans—also includes three other hoppy beers from one of the nation’s foremost IPA brewers: Mind Haze, a hazy IPA done the Firestone way; the West Coast IPA legend known as Union Jack; and the latest release in the Luponic Distortion IPA series.

Nectaron IPA: Limited Single-Hop Release Nectaron is beer four years in the making, dating back to when Brewmaster Matt Brynildson first toured several family hop farms in the famed Nelson region of New Zealand. As he rubbed and smelled different hops, one experimental cultivar stole Brynildson’s attention. Known then by its code name of Hort 4337, this hop was loaded with juicy tropical flavors of passionfruit, grapefruit and pineapple. The following year, Brynildson returned to New Zealand, where hop farmer Brent McGlashen of MAC Farms remembered the brewmaster’s fondness for 4337—which McGlashen was growing on an experimental basis prior to it being given the commercial name of Nectaron. He gave Brynildson early dibs on some of the first yields, which ultimately resulted in this new single-hop release.

“My faith in the Nectaron hop was happily rewarded,” Brynildson said. “This is just a beautiful IPA loaded with tropical New Zealand style.”

Mind Haze: Let Your Mind WanderFrom the coast of California comes Mind Haze, a free-spirited beer made to elevate your perceptions—juicy, fresh and loaded with an imaginative array of tropical hop flavors. This is a hazy IPA done the Firestone way. Mind Haze is ultimately a beer that breaks the mold with explosive hop aromas, a luscious texture and enduring freshness. Union Jack: Loud & Proud Huge flavor that packs a punch. This is Union Jack—an icon of the West Coast IPA style, for those who like their beer loud and proud. Union Jack is the IPA that helped blaze the trail for the revolutionary West Coast style. Named for the British Lion who cofounded the brewery, Union Jack is intensely hoppy yet eminently drinkable from start to finish. A fad-proof IPA for any hop head.

Luponic Distortion: Flavors through HopsNo fruits. No flavorings. No shortcuts. Just the magic of 100 percent natural hops—this is the Luponic Distortion IPA Series. Each Luponic Distortion release features a new hop blend with a focus on emerging and experimental cultivars—all to showcase the insane range of flavors that can be derived from 100 percent natural hops. The latest edition showcases a blend of four New Zealand-grown hops—Nectaron, Nelson, Motueka and Riwaka—for a uniquely fruity and complex flavor profile. Brewers Association: Craft Beer Production Declines 9% in 2020 Amid Pandemic; Number of Breweries Tops 8,700

April 6, 2021 by Dow Scoggins

Brewers Association: Craft Beer Production Declines 9% in 2020 Amid PandemicBoulder, Colorado — The Brewers Association(BA)—the trade association representing small and independent American craft brewers—today released annual production figures for the U.S. craft brewing industry. In 2020, small and independent brewers collectively produced 23.1 million barrels of beer and craft beer production declined 9%, decreasing craft beer production’s overall beer market share by volume to 12.3%, down from 13.6% the previous year.

The overall beer market* dropped 3% by volume in 2020. Retail dollar value was estimated at $22.2 billion, representing 23.6% market share and a 22% decline over 2019. Craft brewers provided more than 138,000 direct jobs, a 14% decrease from 2019.

“2020 was obviously a challenging year for many small brewers, but also one that proved their resilient and entrepreneurial nature,” said Bart Watson, chief economist, Brewers Association. “In a year where U.S. draught sales were down more than 40%, small brewers found new ways to connect with their customers and keep their businesses running.”

Download infographic

The number of operating craft breweries continued to climb in 2020, reaching an all-time high of 8,764, including 1,854 microbreweries, 3,219 brewpubs, 3,471 taproom breweries, and 220 regional craft breweries. Throughout the year, there were 716 new brewery openings and 346 closings. While openings decreased approximately 30% compared to 2019, only half of this drop is attributed to COVID. Increasing market competitiveness and maturity were also factors, and the decline was apparent before the pandemic.

“While many small breweries will remain under pressure until they can fully reopen and welcome their communities into their breweries, the 2020 closing rate has remained on par with 2019, suggesting that the vast majority of breweries will survive going forward,” added Watson.

Note: Numbers are preliminary. For additional insights from Bart Watson, visit Insights & Analysis on the Brewers Association website. The full 2020 industry analysis will be published in the May/June 2021 issue of The New Brewer, highlighting regional trends and production by individual breweries.

New Belgium Brewing and Ale Sharpton Collaborate on Piano Keys Imperial Stout

April 4, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Piano Keys Imperial StoutFort Collins, Colo. – Piano Keys Imperial Stout is back for an encore performance in 4-pack 16oz cans in Atlanta, Georgia this week. The chocolate and vanilla Imperial Stout is an ongoing collaboration between New Belgium Brewing and Dennis Malcolm Byron, aka Ale Sharpton, an Atlanta-based craft beer ambassador.

What started as an honest conversation about increasing the presence and participation of under-represented communities in craft beer with Ale Sharpton, has led to both an incredible beer and relationship. The Piano Keys brand is proudly co-owned by Ale and New Belgium, and the brew blossomed from Ale’s idea to make a beer in a style less common to New Belgium’s repertoire. Piano Keys is a decadent imperial stout brewed with cocoa nibs from Xocolatl.

Craft beer is a huge economic driver for many communities in America. New Belgium and Ale are taking a community-based approach to break down barriers between those facing historical and systemic inequities, especially in the craft beer industry. For every case of Piano Keys sold, $2 will benefit BrewGether, a collaborative giving project established by Ale. New Belgium will also donate $1 per beer sold through its tasting rooms to local nonprofit organizations in Fort Collins, Colorado and Asheville, North Carolina.

“While the experience of brewing and conceptualizing a beer like Piano Keys realized a dream of mine, working with New Belgium on BrewGether also fulfilled my ongoing passion of helping those in need,” said Ale Sharpton. “This collaboration makes it all happen.” Visit www.brewgether.org to learn more.

Find Piano Keys in Atlanta at select retailers, for curbside pick-up at both New Belgium tasting rooms in Fort Collins and Asheville, and via direct to consumer shipping in applicable states. For more information please visit https://www.newbelgium.com/

Sierra Nevada to Release Summer Break Session Hazy IPA

April 4, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Sierra NevadaCHICO, Calif. – Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. is gearing up for a summer of adventure with Summer Break Hazy IPA, a new low-ABV beer perfect for long days of play. Hitting shelves mid April, this national limited-time release shatters the mold of a session IPA by delivering bold hoppy notes of mango and passion fruit, smooth malt flavor, and a low 4.6% ABV to keep the summer fun going all day. It will debut in draft, and 12oz cans in six-packs, 12-packs, and 24-packs.

“Combining these two styles–a light and easy session IPA and a juicy full-flavored hazy IPA—is no easy feat,” said Joe Whitney, Chief Commercial Officer at Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. “But we were determined to brew a beer that could be enjoyed on our own adventures. So, we were really motivated to innovate in this way and develop an insanely flavorful yet crushable beer.”

Summer Break will debut as Sierra Nevada’s summer seasonal, replacing Summerfest, a Czech-style Pilsner.

“Summer Break is an ideal combo of very impactful hop character in both flavor and aroma,” explained Scott Jennings, Innovation Brewmaster at Sierra Nevada. “It really pops. We’ve worked to make sure it’s not too thin, but has the right mouthfeel that really satisfies.”

Catawba Brewing Releases Peanut Butter Jelly Time Strawberry Ale

April 3, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Catawba Brewing CHARLOTTE — When Catawba Brewing’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time (5.7 percent ABV) made its debut in 2012, no one could have predicted the phenomenon it would become by its 10th annual release. At the time, brewing with peanuts was virtually unheard of in a craft beer era in which brewers were less adventurous with adjuncts as compared to 2021 standards. What started as a small scale tribute to a friend’s young son has evolved into the brewery’s most anticipated Specialty Series release with growing demand for the beer every year.

The legendary “PB&J sandwich in a glass,” Peanut Butter Jelly Time (5.7 percent ABV) makes its return to the Catawba menu on Friday, April 2nd – which happens to be National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day. An online pre-sale at shop.catawbabrewing.com continues through Thursday, ending at midnight. The beer will be available for pick-up or purchase at tasting rooms when the doors open at each location on Friday. The brewery has planned Covid-responsible festivities in accordance with CDC and North Carolina guidelines.

Peanut Butter Jelly Time starts as a light brown ale with a touch of wheat in its malt bill, providing the bready base for the star ingredients – real raspberry puree and whole roasted North Carolina peanuts. The beer will be available on draft and in 4-pack 16oz cans. Find it at all five Catawba tasting rooms, the Palmetto Brewing tasting room in Charleston, and in 5-state distribution.

Continuing a tradition started in 2018, the release party for Peanut Butter Jelly Time will include three specialty variations of the beer. PB&J flavors for 2021, in addition to the original Raspberry, will include Strawberry-Rhubarb, Grape, and the debut of Orange Marmalade. PB&J Strawberry-Rhubarb is available in 4-packs for its third consecutive year with limited distribution. Small Batch draft-only PB&J Grape and Orange Marmalade were brewed in Catawba’s Asheville and Charlotte brewhouses, and will be sold exclusively in their tasting rooms. A special PB&J flight will be offered while supplies last, and new PB&J merch items and glassware will be available for purchase starting on Friday.

About Catawba Brewing Company:

Catawba Brewing Co. has been an industry leader in Western North Carolina’s craft beer scene for two decades. The company was founded in 1999 by WNC natives, the Pyatt family, who were inspired by their weekend homebrew hobby. From humble beginnings, the business has grown exponentially to become a major craft beer supplier across five states. Catawba now operates breweries and tasting rooms in four NC cities – Morganton, Asheville, Charlotte, and Wilmington – embracing a hybrid wholesale/retail strategy. With the 2018 acquisition of Palmetto Brewing Co. in Charleston, SC, the Pyatt family hobby has spawned one of the Southeast’s largest and most diverse craft brewing entities.

April 3, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Kimpton Key WestKEY WEST, FLa. — Kimpton Key West, a just-completed collection of five boutique hotels centrally located in and around Old Town and world-famous Duval Street, is welcoming guests with its own brand of brew, Cayo Hueso (Spanish for Key West), specially created by the destination’s own, Waterfront Brewery, and exclusively available at Kimpton Key West.

The new guest offering comes on the heels of the hotel’s official completion celebrated earlier this month with the opening of Ridley House, the fifth and final boutique in the collection that ranges from luxe to laid-back bungalows, villas, cottages and estate-style guest-home accommodations – each with its own rich history and an unmistakable vibe that is uniquely Key West.

From cruiser bikes and snorkel kits that encourage guests to explore, to artwork throughout the lobbies and guestrooms that celebrates the local scenery, Kimpton Key West’s Cayo Hueso is another way the hotel helps bring the Conch Republic experience to life for guests with whimsy and authenticity.

“Things are decidedly more relaxed here, its why travelers love to visit,” said Cheryl Martin, General Manager, Kimpton Key West. “To invite them to kick-back and enjoy this off-the-beaten path, tropical escape like a true local, what could be better than a nice, cold brew to start your vacation off right.”

Kimpton Key West teamed with Waterfront Brewery, the destination’s first, original micro-brewery, to come up with Cayo Hueso, a crisp and fruity refreshing brew full of tropical character. With its slight haze, pale-yellow and orange hues, and sweet citrus aroma derived from a combination of passion fruit puree and juice, Cayo Hueso has quickly become a guest favorite. Epic Releases Super Epic Lager

April 3, 2021 by Dustin Scoggins

Epic BrewingDENVER — It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Super Epic Lager and it’s here to save the day. The latest of Epic Brewing Company’s lagers is intended to be the cold, crispy hero that will satisfy you when you need the most refreshing of beers. Super Epic Lager isn’t the beer you deserve, it’s the beer you’ve earned.

The best thing about Super Epic lager is that it gets to come home with you in a convenient 12-pack with its pals. Each sip of Super Epic Lager is like biting into a crispy apple, peeling the smudge protector off of your new phone, or closing all the tabs in your browser after a long day of work. Face it, you earned this beer.

We know what you’re thinking, what makes Super Epic Lager so super? Epic’s Lead Brewer, Matt Thompson, says “It’s just a dang lager: no gimmicks.” Matts got a great point. He also mentions several key takeaways about the beer, “It’s not a New England IPA or a pastry stout, it doesn’t flaunt sour or fruit or hops”. The simplicity of this beer is what makes it super.

Josh Patton, Denver Tap Room General Manager, uses an equation to explain why this beer is super. “This is the ultimate halftime beer,” Josh said, “Play a half of your favorite sport, drink one of these, play the next half better. Guaranteed.” Josh can’t wait to crush these during half-times all year long.

Super Epic Lager will start saving the day at our Denver Taproom in April. Be a hero by rescuing a 12-pack of Super Epic Lager from a grocery store near you.
