Thesaurus – Beer

Thesaurus - Beer

How many synonyms can you generate for the word “BEER”?
On April 29, 1852, the first edition of Peter Roget’s Thesaurus was published. How many synonyms can you generate for the word “BEER”?
Examples: ale, brew, lager, stout, malt, hops, suds, amber brew, barley pop, brewski, cold one, malt liquor, porter, pint, stein, mug, pitcher, nectar of the gods, brown bottle, chill, oil, swanky, yard, euphoria, cold coffee.

What is Beer?
Beer, one of the world’s oldest and most popular alcoholic beverages, ranks as the third most consumed drink globally, following water and tea. It is crafted through brewing cereal grains, primarily malted barley, though wheat, corn, or rice may also be used. The brewing process involves fermenting starch sugars in the wort, producing ethanol and carbonation in the final product. Hops are typically added to most modern beers, contributing bitterness, flavor, and acting as a natural preservative. Alternative flavorings, such as gruit, herbs, or fruits, may replace or complement hops. In commercial brewing, natural carbonation is often removed and substituted with forced carbonation.

Ancient texts, like the Code of Hammurabi, which regulated beer production and taverns, and “The Hymn to Ninkasi,” a Mesopotamian prayer doubling as a beer recipe, highlight beer’s historical significance in early societies with limited literacy.

Beer is distributed in bottles, cans, or on draught, commonly served in pubs and bars. The global brewing industry includes major multinational corporations and thousands of smaller producers, from brewpubs to regional breweries. Typically, beer has an alcohol by volume (ABV) of 4% to 6%, though it can range from 0.5% to 20%, with some specialty brews reaching 40% ABV or higher.

Norwich Inn and Brewery-Norwich, Vermont

February 6, 2020 by Dustin Scoggins

Brew Master Patrick Dakin is proud to welcome you to the Brewery at the Norwich Inn, home of Jasper Murdock Ales. Our Ales have won 4 silver and a gold medal in the last 3 years at the Great International Beer Competition.

Norwich Inn VermontPresident James Monroe dined at the Norwich Inn in 1817 while on a horseback tour of the New England frontier. Alas, history does not record whether he had a beer. But if he did, it was most likely brewed at the Inn. Vermont had no commercial breweries at the time, and the local beers were brewed in very small batches. Even the biggest copper kettle provided just enough ale for the brewer and his guests.

In 1993, this Vermont brewery tradition was revived at the Norwich Inn when Jasper Murdock’s Alehouse began producing traditional English-style ales in 5-gallon glass jugs. By 1995, an historic livery building was renovated and outfitted with a new four-barrel brew house, enabling 125-gallon batches. Though the vessels are now larger, we remain perhaps the smallest brewery in America. Jasper Murdock’s Ales are sold only at the Norwich Inn and you can take some home. Bottled brew is available by the 22 ounce bottle, by the case, or by the 5 gallon keg.

Jasper Murdock’s Ales are crafted from fine English malts, with hops grown in England and in our own hop garden at the Inn. Because filtration can strip flavor and body from a beer, the ale yeast is allowed to settle out naturally in an extended cold-aging period to ensure that all the goodness reaches your palate. The beer is then pumped underground from the beer cellars to our pub at the Inn.

Jasper Murdock’s Ales
Of the many styles we rotate at the beer taps, we usually have at least 2 of these four for takeout by the bottle or the case:

Whistling Pig Red Ale
Inspired by an Irish classic. Garnet-red in color with a rounded malty flavor and a lingering hop aftertaste.

Old Slipperyskin India Pale Ale
A strong amber ale, full bodied, with a hearty hop flavor and a pronounced hop finish.

Stackpole Porter
A dark ale style dating back to the 1700’s. Roasted malt lends chocolate and coffee-like flavors and aromas.

Second Wind Oatmeal Stout
This black ale has the characteristic flavor of dark roasted barley, the sweetness of caramel malt, a full body contributed by oatmeal, and an intense but balanced hop flavor.

Other styles served on tap at Jasper Murdock’s Alehouse
Jasper Murdock’s Extra Special Bitter
Fuggle & Barleycorn
Oh Be Joyful
Last Pick Pale Ale
Dr. Bowles’ Elixir
Jasper Murdock’s Private Stock
Famous Sidekick
Two Patrick Stout
Sweet Barley

Brewery Creek Inn – Bed and Breakfast, Brewpub & Brewery – Mineral Point, Wisconsin

February 3, 2020 by Dustin Scoggins

Brewery Creek InnHere is the three story lime stone building on Commerce Street. Brewery Creek Inn has five rooms located above the Brewpub Restaurant. Two on the second floor and three on the third. While the amenities are the similar, each has it’s own personality and appeal. Which room is best? That is for you to discover.

In the morning they serve a “Continental plus” breakfast in our second floor guest lounge. This is a simple casual breakfast offering coffee, tea, fruit, juice, yogurt, cereal, toasting bread, hard boiled eggs and really good sweets! Coffee is available as early as you need and we bring the breakfast out at 8:30 AM. It will be out until 9:30 or 10:00. Your holiday. Your pace.

Brewery
Their brewery is a modern, 15-barrel brew house capable of making up to 3,000 barrels of beer per year. They can make ales or lagers, but mostly it has been ales, which tend to have a more complex flavor profile. They can use a simple one step infusion mash, or more elaborate multi-temperature steps.

Brewpub Restaurant
The Brewery Creek Brewpub is an intimate space with exposed stone walls, hand hewn timbers and beams, supporting posts and a beautiful bar. You will not find another like it. We seat about 50 including our bar seats. Our kitchen closes by 8:00 or 8:30, depending on the day of the week, to ensure quiet by 10:00 for our lodging guests.

Beers
Golden Ale
A golden ale, light in color, patterned after the “Kolsch” beer of Cologne. Moderately hopped and refreshing and about 5% abv. Our lightest beer.

India Pale Ale
Huge amounts of hops both bittering ion the kettle and flavor in the fermenter. The problem with most modern “IPAs” is that they have lots of hops, but no age. Traditionally IPAs were at least a year old before consumption. Ours is about 6 months. During that time the hops undergoa change, mellowing.

Lemon Shandy
A classic drink of the British Islanders, beer and lemonade. Alth0ugh the modern Brits and Ausies use Seven up (gasp!) we are more traditional with the ‘ol lemonade and some lime. Sweetish, and sourish, and beery and refreshing. When the last keg of Summer is gone, no more till Spring.

Pale Ale
It is a Pale Ale, everybody knows what that means, yeah? Good amount of hop bitterness, no dry hopping. American hops.

Scottish Porter
This porter is based on a recipe from the Caledonian Brewery in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Brewery Bobbleheads and National Bobblehead Day – January 7th.

January 7, 2020 by Dow Scoggins

National Bobblehead Day is celebrated on January 7th. This holiday recognizes a day of celebration for all spring-connected head bobbing figurines.

Since the early 1900’s, bobbleheads have been entertaining and fascinating fans and collectors. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, too. Bobbleheads commemorate iconic teams, movies, and cartoon characters. Individually, they represent some of our most exciting athletes or thrilling television and movie characters.

Early bobbleheads, known as bobbers or nodders, developed from Germany. They took root in the United States pop culture in the 1950s and 60s. Bobbleheads resurged in the late 1990s when professional sports teams began using them as promotional items. Here are some beer and brewery bobbleheads for the bast and present.

Firestone Walker Anniversary Ale Blended with Local Winemakers

November 8, 2019 by Rick Roberts

Firestone Walker Anniversary AlePASO ROBLES, Calif. — Just as the harvest season was getting underway in the Paso Robles wine country, a boisterous group of local winemakers convened with the Firestone Walker brewing team on September 10 for an annual late-summer rite—the blending of the brewery’s next anniversary ale.

The result is “XXIII”—a limited barrel-aged release that is rolling out to all Firestone Walker markets starting this week.

“Winemakers are practicing experts in the art of blending, which is why we have sought their involvement ever since making our first Anniversary Ale in 2006,” said Brewmaster Matt Brynildson. “Firestone Walker Anniversary Ale is super elegant and seamless. The component beers just flow together in a way that no single beer could have accomplished.”

Blended to Perfection

Firestone Walker Anniversary Ale is a blend of six distinct beers aged in spirits barrels, including bourbon and tequila barrels—resulting in a smooth, bold and remarkably complex drinking experience.

To create XXIII, the winemakers were divided into teams for a friendly but spirited contest. Each team was presented with numerous different component beers and tasked with creating the ultimate blend. Hard work and smack talk ensued.

When the session concluded, all of the individual team blends were blind tasted by the group to determine the favorite. The winning blend became the basis for XXIII, commemorating Firestone Walker’s 23rd year on California’s Central Coast.

For the second year in a row, the winning team included Sherman Thacher and Daniel Callan of Thacher Winery, as well as Will Freeman and Phil LaMontagne of TH Estate Wines. They all walked away with the coveted “cardboard crowns” that are accorded to the winners each year.

XXIII: The Final Blend
Stickee Monkee aged in Bourbon Barrels (28%)
Central Coastal Quad
Parabola aged in Bourbon Barrels (28%)
Russian Imperial Stout
Bravo aged in Bourbon Barrels (20%)
Imperial Brown Ale
Bourbon Barrel Helldorado aged in Bourbon Barrels (15%)
Blonde Barley Wine
Velvet Merkin Aged in Bourbon Barrels (5%)
Milk Stout
Tequila Barrel Helldorado aged in Tequila Barrels (4%)
Blonde Barley Wine

The History of Pete’s Wicked Ale – The First Craft Halloween Beer

October 31, 2018 by Dow Scoggins

Pete’s Wicked AleThe Original Halloween Craft Beer: Pete’s Wicked Ale. In the 1990’s, almost every beer geek was drinking Pete’s Wicked Ale for Halloween and all year round. Pete’s Wicked Ale was a brown ale and was the second best selling craft beer in the ’90s. I was fortunate in 1988 to drink some right out of the bright tank at the August Schell Brewing in New Ulm, Minnesota.

Pete’s Wicked Ale was named after co-founder Pete Slosberg stumbled upon while trying to clone Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale. Pete’s, along with rival Boston Beer Co., makers of Samuel Adams, accounted for more than one-third of all “craft” beer produced domestically by the early 1990s

History of Pete’s Brewing Company – FundingUniverse
Pete’s Brewing’s signature product, Pete’s Wicked Ale, was the result of experimentations that began in a kitchen in Belmont, California, in 1979. Inside the kitchen were a five-gallon container, a big kettle, and a garbage can. It was the realization that the same equipment could be used to make beer and wine that prompted Peter Slosberg, in whose kitchen Pete’s Wicked Ale was born, to begin brewing beer. Originally, Slosberg had his heart set on creating his own wine, but the fermentation process was too slow for his liking, so he converted his homespun equipment to another cause and tried his hand at brewing beer.

Slosberg’s aspirations in 1979 were far less ambitious. His hours spent in the kitchen with kettles and garbage cans were those of a hobbyist; time spent away from a professional career that provided for his full financial support. Slosberg started brewing beer to fulfill a passion, not to start a brewing company. He started his professional career with an academic background in engineering, then worked as a cab driver in New York City before making a name for himself as a marketer for high-technology companies.

Slosberg worked as marketing executive during the day and toiled in his Belmont kitchen at night, experimenting with various recipes for brewing beer that harkened back to an era when German purity standards were followed strictly. Although he had forsaken a hobby as a vintner because the fermentation process took too long, Slosberg demonstrated considerable patience with brewing beer. He tinkered with one recipe after another, giving samples to friends and soliciting their suggestions. For seven years Slosberg searched to find what he considered the perfect brew, and once he had, Pete’s Wicked Ale and Pete’s Brewing were born.

1986 Birth of Wicked Ale
When Pete Slosberg settled on his recipe in 1986 that would become famous as Pete’s Wicked Ale, he was working as a marketing manager at Santa Clara-based Rolm Corporation. By this point, after seven years of laboring over various recipes, Slosberg was ready to turn brewing beer into more than a hobby. He took a sabbatical from Rolm and struck a deal with Palo Alto Brewing Co. in January 1986 to brew beer according to his specifications. Next, Slosberg completed the difficult task of raising the money to finance the production and distribution of his first batch of Pete’s Wicked Ale by convincing a group of corporate investors to shell out $50,000 and make Pete’s Brewing a going concern. By the fall of 1986, Slosberg was ready to put Pete’s Wicked Ale to the test and wriggle into the entrenched $40 billion-a-year beer market.

By December 1986, the first 200 cases of Pete’s Wicked Ale had hit the market, retailing at between $5 and $6 per six-pack. They quickly disappeared from store shelves. The following month, 400 more cases of Pete’s Wicked Ale replenished store shelves, and they were quickly shuttled home by customers as well. Bottles of Pete’s Wicked Ale, with Slosberg’s English bull terrier, Millie, on the label, grabbed customers’ attention; the quality of the beer induced them to buy more. Slosberg was happy, but he remained cautious. “We are waiting to prove the concept, then we will build a brewery,” he remarked to a reporter from a local newspaper. “We think we have a hit.” As Slosberg and his investors bridled their confidence and suppressed the desire to celebrate the success of their fledgling enterprise, disaster struck, checking any grand plans Slosberg had imagined.

Pete’s Brewing’s brewery, Palo Alto Brewing, filed for bankruptcy in January 1987, squelching the opportunity for Pete’s Brewing to increase production totals to meet demand. Panic set in as all those gathered together at the deli in Mountain View were now forced to scurry about, enlist help, and do what they could before the sheriff came to lock the doors of Palo Alto Brewing. “We had to scrounge for people and work the weekend before the door was padlocked,” Slosberg remembered. “We had to scour the West Coast for our particular bottle, then we had to go in and bottle, filter, and pasteurize. It was fun for about two hours.”

So began a six-month transition period for Pete’s Brewing just as the company was sprinting from the starting block. They were difficult months, to be sure, but Slosberg used the time wisely and began rebuilding. Intent on avoiding the prospect of a contract brewer going belly up again, Slosberg selected a veteran in the brewing business when he contracted with the 130-year-old, New Ulm, Minnesota-based August Schell’s Brewing Co. to produce the next batch of Pete’s Wicked Ale. Slosberg also went after new financial help and raised $400,000 from new supporters. By May 1987, when 1,400 cases of Pete’s Wicked Ale were scheduled for delivery to Silicon Valley, Pete’s Brewing was back in business and its flagship product was making a name for itself among beer connoisseurs. Pete’s Wicked Ale was voted the top ale in the “1987 Great American Beer Festival” in Colorado and ranked as one of the top five beers in the United States. In 1988, Pete’s Wicked Ale repeated its achievements, quickly earning a reputation as a premium microbrew.
