California Wild Ales Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary of Ocean Beach Tasting Room with Special Event and New Beer Releases

May 20, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

California Wild AlesSAN DIEGO, California – California Wild Ales, San Diego’s Sour House, is celebrating the first anniversary of the brewery’s second tasting room in the laid-back San Diego neighborhood of Ocean Beach. As part of the festivities, the brewery is releasing several new beers including the brewery’s first canned lager, a double hazy IPA (IIPA) made in collaboration with Thorn Street Brewing, a new barrel-aged fruited sour featuring prickly pear and passion fruit picked in Ocean Beach and two limited release dark sour wild ales made in collaboration with Lost Cause Meadery.

California Wild Ales invites Ocean Beach and the greater San Diego beer-loving community to raise a glass with them on Saturday, May 21, 2022 from 2p.m. – 8p.m. PST at their Ocean Beach location at 4896 Newport Avenue. If you’re looking to send your taste buds on an adventure, swing by California Wild Ales and help celebrate their first anniversary in Ocean Beach.

“The first-anniversary party (a.k.a. OB-One) salutes a significant milestone of San Diego’s funkiest brewery coming to San Diego’s funkiest neighborhood,” said Bill DeWitt co-founder of California Wild Ales. “To celebrate, we decided to throw a party with new beers, collaboration brews, specialty brews, and the debut of a new barrel-aged sour, OB-One.”

Since opening their barrel-aged brewery in 2016, owners Bill DeWitt and Zack Brager have pursued an unusual path in the San Diego brewery scene. Conceived initially as an all-sour barrel-aged bottle club, the two eventually decided to open their doors to the public in late 2017. After operating a tasting room at the brewery in Sorrento Valley, the team at California Wild Ales set their sites on Ocean Beach.Since then, the brewery has added “fresh” beer-flavored beers to their extensive sour lineup. Although California Wild Ales still focuses on barrel-aged sours, they have also introduced a lager, hazy IPA, West Coast IPA, and a rotating hard seltzer.

“We knew from the start that OB was the place for us. Our funky sour beers and this funky coastal neighborhood are a perfect match. We can source fruit from the surrounding area, turn it into something unique and hyper-local and serve it right here at our tasting room,” said Bill DeWitt, co-founder of California Wild Ales.

Named to honor a penny farthing bike-riding neighborhood celeb named Ricky Persky, Bike Lane Lager was the first of the beer-flavored beers beyond sours that California Wild Ales tapped and the first beer the brewery has made available in cans. Bike Lane Lager features German pilsner malt, malted wheat and Noble hops, including Harllertau Blanc, Magnum and Saaz. The lager is now available in four-packs of 16-ounce cans last month and available at both of California Wild Ales’ locations and select retail outlets.

To create its commemorative IIPA, California Wild Ales teamed up with local OBcean and head brewer at Thorn Street Brewing, Shawn Steele. The IIPA, named Over the Hill was made using the 2021 San Diego Brewers Guild hop blend and Southern Passion hops giving this beer a juicy explosion of flavor. The aroma profile includes passion fruit, guava, red berries, melon, tangerine, and grapefruit.

Finally, as part of the one-year anniversary event, California Wild Ales will offer two limited -edition anniversary dark sours. One, a single barrel dark sour with blackberry and vanilla available only on tap. The other, a double barrel aged dark sour with hazelnuts made in a barrel provided by Lost Cause Meadery will be available on draft and in an extremely limited 375ml bottles at the Ocean Beach location.

“Our dark sour base is something we have been waiting to debut and this is the perfect time,” said Zack Brager, co-owner of California Wild Ales. “We are beyond thrilled to celebrate this important milestone and work with leaders in the industry such as Thorn Street Brewery and Lost Cause to expand our product line. The barrel gifted to us by Lost Cause Meadery is extra special to us because it was the barrel that was used to make mead to commemorate the birth of the owner’s first son.”

Admission is free, and all are welcome. California Wild Ales satellite tasting room is located in the heart of Ocean Beach at 4896 Newport Avenue.

About California Wild Ales

California Wild Ales, San Diego’s Sour House, is San Diego’s only all-barrel-aged sour brewery. It began creating fresh and funky wild ale in 2015 and opened its first tasting room in 2018. The brewery’s sour beer is aged in American, French, and Hungarian oak barrels for a minimum of nine months and uses fresh, local produce from local San Diego farmers. California Wild Ales is known for its branding, which includes characters representing the yeast and bacteria that are used to ferment the sour beer named Lacto (short for Lactobacillus), Brett (short for Brettanomyces), and P.D.O. (short for Pediococcus)

Threes Brewing Releases Super Vliet

May 19, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Threes BrewingBROOKLYN, New York – Threes Brewing is releasing Super Vliet to kick off the 2022 Summer of Pils (short for Summer of Pilsner). Threes is known for their award-winning hoppy ales, mixed culture beers, and lagers. Super Vliet is a dry-hopped, can-conditioned version of Threes’ highly regarded flagship Pilsner.

Matt Levy, Head Brewer, says, “Brewing a Pilsner is an exercise in simplicity, and Super Vliet, while super, is no exception.” The brew team stuck true to the Vliet tradition by using carefully selected noble hop varietals. Can-conditioning with actively fermenting Krausen from another young beer was a key process in elevating this limited edition variant of Vliet from simple to super. The final product is incredibly effervescent and possesses a wonderful hint of spice and Noble resin, with traditional flavor permeating through each sip. Those familiar with Threes’ award-winning Vliet Pilsner will find more floral notes and smaller, finer bubbles in Super Vliet, making it a perfect beer for summer.

This “larger than life” version of Vliet needed a label to match its ambition. Threes’ branding partners at Yard NYC delivered a simple yet striking design that plays off of the classic Vliet label, pairing the signature lager waves pattern visible on almost every Lager in the Threes portfolio with an exaggerated logotype.

Find Super Vliet for a limited time at all five Threes Brewing locations, in select retail stores and bars, and at threesbrewing.com. For more ideas on what to drink this #summerofpils, follow @threesbrewing.

Sixpoint Brewery & Mike’s Hot Honey Release Slice Sipper

May 16, 2022 by Dustin Scoggins

Sixpoint BreweryBROOKLYN, New York – Two Brooklyn-based brands are teaming up this summer to launch the ultimate beer for sipping with your favorite slice of pizza. Sixpoint Brewery, founded in Red Hook in 2004 and Mike’s Hot Honey, founded in Greenpoint in 2010, have joined forces to craft Slice Sipper, an easy-drinking, farmhouse ale made with Mike’s Hot Honey and hopped with Hallertau Blanc for bright citrus and peppercorn aromas and a touch of mild chili pepper heat with each sip.

The collaboration was born out of a desire from the two pizza-adjacent brands to create a beer that pairs perfectly with pizza, a staple of New York food culture. For Sixpoint, beer, like food, are integral parts of our culture.  In its Beer Is Culture campaign, Sixpoint teams up with other artisans, musicians and entrepreneurs to highlight the moments when beer and life intersect – and in this case the pairing could not be more delicious.

“We set out to create the ultimate beer for sipping with your favorite slice,” said Mike’s Hot Honey founder, Mike Kurtz.  “Coming out of the pandemic, summer 2022 is going to be a special time in NYC and this collaboration was a way for us to bring people together over beer and pizza and celebrate with our community.”

The artwork on the Slice Sipper can features the city skyline of NYC with a pizza slice skateboarding down the block, double fisting a pint of beer and a bottle of Mike’s Hot Honey.

The collaboration between the two brands has seeds that were planted way back in 2010 when Kurtz first launched Mike’s Hot Honey, a chili pepper-infused honey, out of Paulie Gee’s pizzeria in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  “When I was working as a pizza maker and bartender at Paulie Gee’s, Sixpoint was always on tap.  It was over those beers that friends and customers convinced me to take the leap and start my own business.  Now it’s all coming full circle with our new beer collab,” said Kurtz.

“We love Mike’s story of how he got started and the role that Sixpoint beers played in his journey,” said Derek Detenber, chief marketing officer for Sixpoint.  “People come together over beer.  They share ideas and create and when they do, amazing things can happen.   Mike’s Hot Honey is now a culinary phenomenon and loved by many fans.  That’s what Beer is Culture is all about.”

Brewed in Sixpoint’s Red Hook, Brooklyn, brewery, Slice Sipper will be available at NYC and Hudson Valley Whole Foods Market stores as well as select NYC-area pizzerias, bars and retailers starting May 6th and folks can order 4-packs of 16 fl oz cans of Slice Sipper for pick-up at the Red Hook brewery from Sixpoint.com.

Since launching in 2010, Mike’s Hot Honey has grown into a national brand and is featured on pizzeria and restaurant menus and retail shelves across the country.  Sixpoint Brewery, founded in Brooklyn in 2004, is a pioneer in the craft beer space and one of New York’s most well-respected breweries.  Since its inception in 2004, the brewery has released a steady stream of high-quality craft beers that are widely available at retail and on tap in many bars and restaurants across the country.

Freshchester Pale Ale officially launches June 2022 in Sweden throughout Systembolaget. Freshchester will also be featured on draft in select bars and restaurants across the country.

Systembolaget is the Swedish government-owned chain whose retail stores are the only ones in the country allowed to sell alcoholic beverages containing more than 3.5% alcohol, for take-home consumption. Within the Systembolaget there are several levels of availability. Some products are in the ‘ordering range’ or beställningssortimentet – orderable to stores, but not stocked. Then there are seven levels of availability in the chain of over 450 stores nationwide – T9, T7, T5, T3, T2, T1 and BASE. The lower the number, the greater the availability, with a “BASE” availability meaning that the product is available in all or virtually all Systembolaget stores.

About Captain Lawrence

Captain Lawrence Brewing Co. is located just a short drive north of New York City, in Westchester County, NY, where it is the area’s largest craft brewery, producing over 28,000 barrels of beer annually. Founded in 2006 by Scott Vaccaro, Captain Lawrence brews a wide range of beer styles, producing as many as one hundred brands in a year. Shortly after opening, the brewery began to gain widespread notoriety for their sour and barrel-aged beers, winning their first of eight GABF medals in 2007. Today, in addition to their award-winning sour beers, Captain Lawrence is widely known for brewing extremely Fresh IPAs, highly drinkable lagers, and a variety of specialty craft beers.
