Athletic Brewing Releases Limited Edition Non-Alcoholic “Closer By The Mile” IPA

July 30, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Athletic Brewing Releases Limited Edition Non-Alcoholic “Closer By The Mile” IPA

STRATFORD, Conn. — Although the Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is reimagining to a virtual experience in 2020, the organization’s fundraising efforts to beat cancer never stops. To support the campaign to raise funds for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute (Dana-Farber), America’s first solely non-alcoholic brewer and PMC partner, Athletic Brewing, is releasing a “Closer by the Mile” brew to all PMC riders plus beer lovers in Massachusetts. Athletic will donate all proceeds from “Closer by the Mile” to the organization’s 2020 fundraising efforts.

Closer by the Mile is a very hop-forward IPA. It features a Vienna malt profile, tons of hop character and aroma. PMC riders and beer lovers can expect notes of blueberry and tropical fruit generated from Mosaic and specialty hops, but none of the alcohol that could affect their training for this year’s reimagined PMC.

“Cancer doesn’t stop for a pandemic and neither does the passion that PMC riders bring to the effort to fund a cure for cancer. We couldn’t be prouder to offer Closer by the Mile because cancer must be beat,” said Athletic founder Bill Shufelt.

“As we prepare for PMC 2020 Reimagined, we are thankful for the continued support from Athletic Brewing,” said Glynn Hawley, Director of Provisions & Logistics at the PMC. “Athletic remains committed to our shared mission to support Dana-Farber in the fight against cancer, which is more important than ever. We can’t wait to enjoy a “Closer by the Mile” brew during PMC 2020 Reimagined.”

This year is Athletic Brewing’s second year as a PMC partner. In 2019, Shufelt and the Athletic team served the brewery’s revolutionary non-alcoholic Upside Down Golden Ale, Run Wild IPA and Cerveza Atletica at the end of each day during PMC weekend. Beginning the July 15, PMC riders can purchase Closer by the Mile at AthleticBrewing.com through an exclusive link provided by the PMC. Athletic will ship Closer by the Mile directly to the rider’s home. For all beers lovers in the PMC’s home state of Massachusetts, Athletic Brewing, in partnership with Night Shift Distributing, will release Closer by the Mile to retail locations beginning July 21.

About the Pan-Mass Challenge
The Pan-Mass Challenge (PMC) is a bike-a-thon that today raises more money for charity than any other single athletic fundraising event in the world. The 41st PMC will take place on August 1, 2020. The PMC was founded in 1980 by Billy Starr, who remains the event’s executive director, an annual cyclist and a fundraiser. The PMC has since raised $717 million for adult and pediatric patient care and cancer research at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund. The event donates 100% of every rider-raised dollar directly to the cause, generating 57% of the Jimmy Fund’s annual revenue as Dana-Farber’s single largest contributor. The PMC has successfully melded support from committed cyclists, volunteers, corporate sponsors and individual contributors, all of which are essential to the PMC’s goal and model: to attain maximum fundraising efficiency while increasing its annual gift. The PMC’s hope and aspiration is to provide Dana-Farber’s doctors and researchers with the necessary resources to discover cures for all cancers. For more information on the Pan-Mass Challenge, visit pmc.org.

Dogfish Head’s 120 Minute IPA Returns with New Bottle Carrier

July 27, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Dogfish Head’s 120 Minute IPA Returns with New Bottle Carrier

MILTON, Del. – The Holy Grail for Hopheads, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery’s iconic 120 Minute IPA is back with a bold, new bottle carrier. Originally released in 2003, 120 Minute IPA is an Imperial IPA continuously hopped with a copious amount of high-alpha American hops throughout the boil and whirlpool, and dry-hopped with another whopping pallet of hops. Clocking in at 15-18% ABV, this unfiltered and abundantly hoppy brew boasts sweet, almost candy-like, hop aromas with flavors of hop resin and a lingering bitterness. Making its way shelves nationwide – where legal, this year’s 120 Minute IPA is available NOW in 4pk/12oz bottles.

“The release of 120 Minute IPA is always one of my favorites times of year. I’m beyond excited to grab a couple of bottles of this year’s batch to add to my cellar, as well as a bottle to crack open and share with my wife, Mariah,” said Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head founder and brewer. “To best experience 120 Minute IPA’s intricate flavor profile, I recommend serving it cool, not cold in a snifter or cognac glass. And if you can muster up the self-control to allow your 120 Minute IPA to age for a couple of years, the flavors and aromas will grow even more complex, with greater notes of marmalade and an enhanced sherry-like character.”

To better complement the audacious aromas and flavors found in 120 Minute IPA, Dogfish Head revamped the beer’s bottle carrier, making it bolder and more eye-catching with a jet-black background and metallic gold graphics. At the center of the design is something every beer-lover will quickly recognize, a hop cone. The ingredient responsible for bringing 120 Minute IPA to life, this hand-drawn hop cone exudes golden rays of light, assuring folks that their search is over – they found it, theHoly Grail for Hopheads.

Those scouring the shelves for some 120 Minute IPA will notice it is not the only one of Dogfish Head’s off-centered ales sporting a new look.Dogfish Head’s 60 Minute IPA, a classic east coast IPA brewed with a slew of Northwest hops, is also boasting a brand-new design. The forest green graphics gracing the label ofDogfish Head’s classic 60 Minute IPA feature a clock-like contraption to represent Sam’s invention of the continual hopping process, the brewing mechanism that gives60 Minute IPA is abundantly hoppy, yet beautifully balanced flavor profile.

“At Dogfish Head, we brew ‘Off-Centered Ales for Off-Centered People.’ Our unique recipes and the liquids they produce are what set us apart from the other 7,000+ independent craft breweries in America,” said Sam. “With our new packaging designs for 120 Minute IPA and60 Minute IPA, we’re hoping to highlight the off-centeredness within each bottle or can and to celebrate the hand-crafted touch that goes into the creation of each our delicious libations.”

America’s Coolest Home Brewery built by Chris Bowen of Hammersmith Ales
HammerSmith Ales started in 2005 , the idea for the name Hammersmith was originally inspired after the town outside of London, England. HammerSmith is rich in history and has a few landmarks significant to music, a famous bridge and an important stop along the river Thames. Chris’s interest in British culture started many years ago, he has always been a fan of British beer , authors of literature, and British personalities. Early on in my exploration of beer, he quickly discovered breweries like Fuller’s, Shepard Naeme, Young’s, Samuel Smith and Greene King. When he started brewing, he quickly decided that he was going to focus on British style beers like English Bitters, Extra Special Bitter , India Pale Ale, Old Ale and Barleywine.

Deschutes Brewery Releases Non-Alcoholic Irish Stout

July 8, 2020 by Andrew Innes

Deschutes Brewery Non-Alcoholic Irish Stout

BEND, Ore. – Last month, Deschutes celebrated 32 years as a trusted craft brewery. Black Butte Porter, the beer that put the small town brewery on the map in the 80’s, remains the #1 selling porter in the US, even though it only resides in two thirds of the country. Through three decades of innovation and experimentation, Deschutes has remained committed to extending their pursuit of quality to nontraditional craft beer styles that offer a unique value to their customers. Recently, Deschutes embarked on a new quest where the goal was simple, but lofty; to create a high-quality non-alcoholic beer that rivals the experience of a full-strength craft beer.

Deschutes introduces a non-alcoholic Irish Stout, a traditional Irish-style stout with coffee-like roasted malt character, light chocolate and a dry, light bodied drinking experience. For decades, the most prevalent non-alcoholic beers have been lager styles. Deschutes paved the way for craft with Black Butte Porter, a dark beer among lagers, and believes with their longstanding commitment to quality and reputation in the craft brewing industry, they can do this again in the non-alcoholic craft beer segment by bringing a more flavorful craft drinking experience to this growing category.

“This has been a passion project for me,” said Veronica Vega, new product development director for Deschutes. “It is a way for us to connect with a growing population of people, including young people, who are looking to reap the health benefits of an alcohol reduced or alcohol-free lifestyle and still enjoy the act of drinking beer.”

Studies show that currently 22% of Millennials say they are drinking less alcohol and the majority indicate it is for health and wellness reasons and craft beer trends indicate growth in non-alcohol beer.

But Deschutes couldn’t do it alone without the special technology required to produce a beer with no alcohol. The brewery partnered with Sustainable Beverage Technologies to utilize their proprietary BrewVo® process that gently manages alcohol content, while maintaining flavor and aroma. The beer fully ferments after all processing takes place, and then a proprietary technique preserves the mouth feel.

“The process we selected was based on producing the best flavor, enough to surprise our customers that the beer indeed is non-alc.” Said Vega.

The BrewVo® process was developed by Sustainable Business Technologies Founder, Patrick Tatera, who combined his passion for home brewing and expertise in engineering to create this patented brewing process that’s the most environmentally friendly and sustainable.

“While working with a consortium of breweries on various development projects, we discovered that the BrewVo® technology, while developed for production of full-strength beer, was capable of producing the best tasting NA beers on earth,” said Tatera. “Peter Bouckaert and Grady Hull, formerly of New Belgium Brewing, helped us prove our NA beer capabilities for matching the full-flavor spectrum of a full-strength beer.” Sustainable Beverage Technologies later developed a non-alcoholic beer that took home a gold medal in the national craft beer competition, Best of Craft Beer Awards, where they competed against full strength beers in the session beer category.

Deschutes is releasing their non-alcoholic Irish Stout this Wednesday, July 8, direct to consumers through their website with a consumer response program to gather feedback before a larger release later this year. It will also be available for purchase through Deschutes Brewery pubs and tasting rooms while it lasts. website

VIVE Hard Seltzer Refreshes Packaging

July 6, 2020 by Andrew Innes

VIVE Hard Seltzer Refreshes PackagingCOVINGTON, Ky. – VIVE Hard Seltzer, a widely-recognized regional velocity power player, introduces a carton refresh that accompanies the brand’s vast growth in the hard seltzer category. Offering such varieties as Lime, Dragon Fruit, Mango and Grapefruit, the updated packaging brings vibrant imagery to the all-natural adult refreshment. The redesign also comes at a time when VIVE has proven to be a major force within the category. Consumers can find the Original Variety Pack on shelf at Kroger, Meijer, and Walmart stores throughout Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio at an SRP of $13.99 – $14.99.

Year to date, IRI data ending June 14th identified VIVE as a hard seltzer generating the second highest velocity among regional competitive counterparts in the Midwest. In competing with larger counterparts, VIVE still proved to be a hard seltzer generating the eleventh highest velocity since June to date, with 213 percent growth since the same time last year. This growth, paired with unprecedented growth in the hard seltzer category, overall, prompted the VIVE packaging refresh currently on retailer shelves.

“VIVE is an exciting brand that has the capacity to lead the way in the hard seltzer category,” shares Jake Rouse, Co-Founder and CEO at Braxton Brewing Company. “It’s made with all-natural flavors that make each sip as pure in flavor as possible. Now, introducing the packaging refresh, we’re excited to shed an even brighter light on this brand.”

Armed with the knowledge of VIVE’s consistent growth, the brand has continued to compete at the national level, with hard seltzer brands with deeper pockets, broader resources and more consumer recognition. In anticipating continued growth in the ready-to-drink category, the redesign also solidifies VIVE’s leadership and prepares it for an unprecedented summer.

About VIVE Hard Seltzer
VIVE Hard Seltzer began as a simple idea. An idea to create a beer-alternative that would inspire, motivate and stir a shift in the way we move. Something light, crisp, refreshing and not too heavy. After more than a year of experimentation, VIVE was born. Cincinnati’s first locally crafted hard seltzer comes in 8 refreshing flavors, is easy to drink, gluten free and all natural with only 100 calories and two grams of carbs, it’s the perfect drink to help you live it up. In 2020, VIVE was named as a key regional velocity power player by Nielsen, having dominated hard seltzer sales in Midwest, as compared to its competitive counterparts.
