Tröegs Celebrates Scratch #500 Milestone With Double Perpetual IPA

October 25, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

HERSHEY, Pennsylvania— Tröegs Independent Brewing announces the release of Double Perpetual IPA, an amped-up version of its iconic year-round Perpetual IPA, on Thursday, October 19.

This limited offering commemorates the milestone of five hundred beers released through the brewery’s Scratch Series, which allows Tröegs to experiment with new brewing techniques and ingredient combinations.

Scratch #500 takes cues from Perpetual IPA, which is the best-selling craft beer in the state of Pennsylvania, according to data compiled by Circana, the leading advisor on the complexity of consumer behavior.

Cycling through copious amounts of Cascade, Chinook, Nugget and Citra hops, this bigger, bolder version of Perpetual IPA boasts sticky notes of citrus fruit and pine.

“One of the ways we share our creative process is through our Scratch Series,” says Tröegs brewmaster and co-founding brother John Trogner.

The Scratch Series launched in 2007 to coincide with the 10th anniversary of the family-owned, independent brewery. Over the years, it has served as the springboard for potential seasonal and year-round releases, one of the first being Perpetual IPA.

“It’s hard to imagine Tröegs without Perpetual, but there was a time when we didn’t brew an IPA. Then, Citra hops came along, so we said, ‘Why not?’”

After half a dozen Scratch batches, Trogner and his brewing team finally landed on the recipe that would become Perpetual IPA, one of Tröegs’ most recognizable and popular beers.

The Scratch Series expanded when Tröegs moved its operations from Harrisburg to Hershey with the installation of a 15-barrel brewhouse designed to facilitate smaller batches of beer. It got even more granular in 2020 with the installation of the Scratch Lab, a 3-barrel nano-brewery designed to replicate the temperature controls, pressure, and geometry of Tröegs’ 100-barrel production brewhouse.

“With the Scratch Lab, we can break up 15-barrel brews into nano batches,” says Tröegs Brewing Manager Tim Mayhew. “That allows us to test things like dry-hop combinations and yeast strains side-by-side.”

Scratch #500 is available on draft and in limited 16-oz. cans exclusively at Tröegs. Customers can try it alongside several new dishes on the fall Snack Bar menu, available now in the Tröegs tasting room.

Lawson’s Finest Liquids Achieves 100% Solar Powered Brews

October 24, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

WAITSFIELD, Vermont – The sustainability-minded team at Vermont craft brewery Lawson’s Finest Liquids are proud to announce that they have achieved their goal of 100% solar powered beer and brewery operations. Following a B Corp certification this year, Lawson’s Finest is continuing to invest in its commitment to earth-friendly brewing. This landmark is the culmination of years of thoughtful planning and investment in sustainable energy, which includes the largest solar canopy in Vermont.

“Brewing delicious beer is a resource-intensive art,” said Sean Lawson, Lawson’s Finest Liquids founding brewer. “But we always knew there were better, greener ways to do what we love. We started investing in solar in 2019 with the ultimate goal of going one hundred percent solar, and now we’re finally here.”

The Lawson’s Finest team installed its first brewery roof solar array in 2019 that enabled them to tap into renewable energy for their production processes. The 43kw AC system and series of over 140 solar panels produce approximately 52,000 kWh of electricity per year.

Additionally, in 2022 they constructed the largest solar canopy in the state of Vermont. The structure features 495 individual solar modules (REC 375W) positioned above 40 covered parking spaces and 12 level-two electric vehicle charging stations. The setup, along with a solar array that generates 215kW across 495 modules, harnesses the power of the sun to offset about 60% of the Waitsfield brewery’s utility bill. In terms of beer, this means supplying enough energy to produce about 2.4 million cans annually of Lawson’s Finest brews.

Lawson’s Finest’s solar initiative is a part of its Social Impact Program or the SIP, as the team fondly refers to the brewery’s efforts to support healthy communities, sustainable recreation and environmental conservation. The SIP has also donated more than $2 million to worthwhile environmental causes and community-building efforts since 2018.

“Over the past 15 years, the Lawson’s Finest team has built a vibrant culture that authentically weaves the Social Impact Program into the core of the brewery,” says Adeline Druart, Lawson’s Finest Liquids CEO. “100% solar powered brews are something to celebrate. Looking ahead, we will continue to reduce our use of wastewater and energies by identifying further opportunities to become more environmentally friendly. It’s all part of a bigger picture to brew great beer and do good in the world.”

Lawson’s Finest’s solar efforts will help the state achieve its goal of reaching 90% renewable energy by 2050. But sustainability doesn’t stop here. The Lawson’s Finest team is dedicated to continuous improvement in the areas of sustainability and community-building.

Visit Lawson’s Finest Liquids’ brewery, taproom and retail store in Waitsfield, Vermont, or find their sustainably brewed beers in the cooler section of your favorite packie. Lawson’s Finest is Cold Stored. Cold Shipped. Cold Shelved. to keep every beer brewery-fresh.

About Lawson’s Finest Liquids

The SIP has raised more than $2 Million for important causes since 2018. The brewery is a values-driven business with a commitment to excellence, authenticity, community, sustainability and fun. Founded by Sean and Karen Lawson, the company boasts a growing collection of award-winning beers brewed with passion and precision including the renowned Sunshine family of IPAs. Beginning as a home-based 1-barrel nanobrewery in 2008, Lawson’s Finest expanded production capacity in 2011 and 2014, growing to include distribution across nine states in the Northeast. In 2018, Lawson’s Finest opened its popular destination Brewery, Taproom and Retail Store in central Vermont’s Mad River Valley town of Waitsfield.

Three Floyds to Open Taproom in 2024

October 23, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

MUNSTER, Indiana— Three Floyds is set to open a new, highly-anticipated Taproom at their brewery in Munster, Indiana in 2024. Founded in 1996, the company solidified their status as pioneers in the craft beer industry by producing their ‘not normal’ brews, such as Alpha King, Zombie Dust, and Gumballhead. They are currently the 24th top-producing craft brewery in the United States, as reported by the Brewers Association.

The Taproom plans were submitted to the Town of Munster on October 10. The destination will be located on Three Floyds’ multi-acre campus, featuring indoor and outdoor bars, a restaurant, and retail kiosk. A future phase of development may include an event space and area for live music.

“Three Floyds Brewpub is being re-forged as a modern American Taproom and Beer Garden,” says owner and CEO Nick Floyd, “The new Three Floyds Taproom design combines and celebrates the elements of the land, including Indigenous mound building berms and prairie landscape, mixed with Frank Lloyd Wright’s influence. We’ll also feature monthly Taproom-exclusive beers and some select menu items from the former brewpub.”

Three Floyds opened their brewpub in November 2005 at their brewery in Munster – about 30 miles southwest of Chicago. The town quickly became a destination for craft beer fans around the world.

The former brewpub poured pints of the company’s core brands, various seasonal offerings, exclusive small-batch beers, and guest brews spanning the globe. Beyond the beer, Three Floyds brought their ‘not normal’ ethos into their full-service kitchen led by various acclaimed chefs throughout the years, landing them media attention on Food Network, Travel Channel, and international news outlets.

Three Floyds announced that they would close their brewpub permanently in 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The former brewpub space is now undergoing construction after it was utilized as a retail kiosk to sell beer, spirits, and merchandise after the closure.

The Taproom will feature the full portfolio of Three Floyds beer and spirits, WarPigs USA brews, and select throwback menu items, including their popular barbecue beef jerky and beer-battered cheese curds.

“The space will feel like Three Floyds the minute you step in,” says President Gary Modrow. “It will include architectural and design elements of the former brewpub with new and upgraded features, spaces and features. We have a long tradition of being unabashedly ‘not normal’ and the Taproom will be the next iteration of that.”

The brewery is working with Fifty/50 Restaurant Group to assist with the project and manage the hospitality program. “We chose to outsource the hospitality operations in order to focus on our top priority – beer,” says Modrow. “Three Floyds will drive all creative direction for the Taproom, while Fifty/50 will handle the day-to-day execution.”

Additional details about Three Floyds Taproom, including the opening date, will be announced in the coming months.

About Three Floyds Brewing

Three Floyds Brewing is a Midwestern brewery dedicated to crafting a wide and ‘not normal’ range of quality ales and lagers. October 23, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

DENVER, Colorado – Denver Beer Co. announced the market release of Easy Living Hop Water, a non-alcoholic sparkling beverage. Brewed and canned by Denver Beer Co., Easy Living is the first hop water from a Colorado-based craft brewery to be distributed in off-premise locations throughout the Colorado market and beyond. The sparkling beverage will be sold starting immediately in select independent off-premise retailers, restaurants and bars, as well as in all Denver Beer Co. taprooms.

Available in Citrus and Hibiscus flavors, Easy Living is a sparkling beverage containing carbonated water, CryoPop hops, citric acid, natural flavors, and brewer’s yeast. Easy Living is a true “never-alc” product. Where some non-alcoholic beverages contain less than .5% ABV, Easy Living is not fermented and has not had alcohol removed in the brewing process. The beverage is 0% ABV and is crisp, light, and refreshing with just a hint of hop aroma and flavor.

“We know there are many reasons and occasions for an NA beverage and we wanted to provide our consumers with an option in those moments,” shared Patrick Crawford, co-founder of Denver Beer Co. “Easy Living pays homage to our brewing roots and features the hop flavors and aromas that the craft beer drinker knows and loves, but also checks all the boxes for health-conscious consumers. Hop Water is a relatively new category of beverage and is a great NA option for someone who doesn’t want the calories, carbs or gluten that come with your typical NA beer. At the same time, it has a more complex flavor profile than just your standard bubbly water. Easy Living is super refreshing and can be enjoyed any time of day and on any occasion.”

Easy Living Hop Water first debuted in Denver Beer Co. taprooms in January, 2023 and was brewed in small-batch form. Easy Living is now available for purchase in 6-pack cases as well as single serving cans at liquor stores, restaurants and bars, retailers and restaurants that are not licensed to sell alcohol, grocery and convenience stores, as well as Denver Beer Co. taprooms. Easy Living will be distributed throughout Colorado initially with additional market releases planned for early 2024.
