21st Amendment Brewery Unveils Brewpub Refresh

October 2, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

SAN FRANCISCO, California— 21st Amendment Brewery, one of the Bay Area’s original independent craft breweries, is pulling back the curtains of their 23-year-old brewpub to unveil an exciting revitalization project.

It started with two friends who had a passion for brewing delicious beer, cooking good food and providing excellent neighborhood service. Co-Founders, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan took a big dream and made it a reality by opening a lively brewpub just a short stroll away from the newly opened San Francisco Giants Oracle Park in 2000. This bustling location in the SoMa District and an invaluable friendship guided the 21st Amendment Brewery brand from a little pipe dream to helping shape the Bay Area craft beer scene into what it is today. Their vision of creating a Brewpub for the local community to enjoy has continued to be a pillar of the neighborhood, and with this refresh, will continue to be for many years to come.

With Brian Reccow of The Specialistas, Hospitality Solutions, and a long-time friend of Freccia and O’Sullivan at the helm of this refresh, the project involved exterior flourishes including an eye-catching mural by local artist Tobias Freccia, a revamped menu and extensive interior enhancements to really bring the building back to life.

“Refreshing and revitalizing this wonderful historic building, along with our menu and service standards, has been an exciting opportunity to reinvigorate our SoMa neighborhood”, says Nico Freccia, Co-Founder and COO of 21st Amendment Brewery. “San Francisco is still struggling to recover from the pandemic, and craft beer has had challenges recently. While our neighborhood has also been impacted, we really wanted to showcase that craft beer and the Brewpub experience is alive and well in San Francisco. With this project, we aim to fuse our rich history with a modern, inviting atmosphere that reflects our dedication to crafting exceptional beer, providing an unforgettable culinary pub experience for guests, and paying homage to our San Francisco SoMa district roots.”

21st Amendment Brewery Executive Chef, Joel Ruiz, teamed up with Reccow to revitalize the brewery’s expansive menu and create an elevated and playful culinary experience for guests. This menu evolution brings influences from classic pub fare to modern California cuisine to create a sophisticated twist on classic ballpark food. The menu will feature new dishes that pair harmoniously with the brewery’s extensive beer list, including a seared Ahi Sandwich with ginger soy slaw, a delicious new pizza pie program, and a number of mouthwatering appetizers – to name a few additions.

“Since we opened our doors, the 12 barrel system at the Brewpub has been our source of inspiration and innovation, allowing us to experiment with new hops and ingredients,” said Shaun O’Sullivan, 21st Amendment Brewery Co-Founder and Brewmaster. “It serves as our test kitchen for crafting unique beers that cater to our two locations here in San Francisco and our Taproom in San Leandro at our production brewery. We want our beer list to reflect our brand’s history of celebrating originality and make sure that every time guests arrive, there’s something new on the menu that speaks to them and takes them on a journey.”

21st Amendment Brewery delivers a revolving door of cutting edge brews, with a handful of year-round favorites, seasonal brews, and their Made in the Bay Small Batch Beers, which allows for more experimentation and the ability to brew beer that pairs perfectly with their updated menu. It also means that guests will always have a new beer to try, ranging from IPA’s to fruit beers, to Mexican-Style cream ales, sours, spiced ales, and more.

21st Amendment Brewery invites beer enthusiasts, foodies, baseball fans, and the Bay Area community as a whole to experience the refresh first hand and join in on the cutting-edge food and beer experience.

About 21st Amendment Brewery

In 2000, Nico Freccia and Shaun O’Sullivan opened the doors to the 21st Amendment Brewpub in San Francisco’s historic South Park neighborhood. Through the years, 21st Amendment Brewery has quickly become one of the Bay Area’s favorite breweries, along with their fan favorites, Hell or High Watermelon Wheat, and Brew Free! or Die Blood Orange IPA. 21st Amendment Brewery paved the way for canned craft beer, and quickly expanded beyond the Bay Area, offering delicious year-round favorites, and unique limited releases through their ‘Made in the Bay Small Batch Beers’ program. 21st Amendment Brewery is a proud California independent brewery, brewing in San Francisco and San Leandro, California.

Angry Horse Brewing Welcomes New Brewer Daniella Lopez

October 2, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

MONTEBALLA, California – At Angry Horse Brewing, our love for brewing beer goes beyond a mere passion—it’s a burning obsession that drives us to create exceptional brews and share them with our community. We are more than just a craft brewery; we are a catalyst for revitalization, a force shaping our community, and a builder of connections, one beer at a time.

Angry Horse Brewing is not your average craft brewery. Nestled in the heart of Montebello, this small but mighty brewery has become a cherished fixture in the lives of local residents. Founded by Nathan and James McCusker in 2014 and opening in 2017, it quickly became apparent that this wasn’t just a place to grab a drink; it was a hub for community engagement and a testament to the power of local businesses.

From the beginning, Angry Horse Brewing has been committed to using locally sourced ingredients whenever possible, supporting neighboring farms and artisans. Their beers are a reflection of the community’s flavor, with unique brews inspired by local tastes and traditions.

Quality has always been at the forefront of Angry Horse Brewing’s mission. They have consistently strived to create the best-tasting beers, pushing the boundaries of traditional brewing techniques while respecting the fundamentals of the craft. Over the years, they’ve amassed a loyal following of beer enthusiasts who appreciate the attention to detail and creativity poured into each batch.

At Angry Horse, education is a major focus. With their “Beer Education Series,” serving on the Rio Hondo Fermentation Science Advisory Board, and now Nathan serving at the Education Chair for the Los Angeles Brewers Guild, they feel strongly about the continued education in beer both professionally and also for the community at large.

With a commitment to innovation, Angry Horse has produced a diverse range of beers that cater to the eclectic tastes of its community. Whether you prefer a hoppy IPA, a robust stout, or a refreshing seasonal ale, there’s something for everyone at Angry Horse.

As the brewery’s reputation continued to grow, Angry Horse recognized the need to bring fresh talent on board. Enter Danielle Lopez an accomplished brewer with a strong track record in the craft beer industry. Danielle brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for brewing, making them the perfect fit for Angry Horse’s mission.

Daniella has been in the industry for almost 9 years. She started at Sanctum Brewing where the team won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Fest for their Munich-Style Helles. From there she has continued in the professional brewing career at several other breweries. Her skills are all over the place, she likes to challenge herself and try to learn as much as she can and to continue to grow were needed. She loves to brew old school style beers. When not brewing, she is often cooking or baking, her other true love

Even with their growth, Angry Horse remains firmly committed to its community-centric ethos. They continue to host events that bring the neighborhood together, from live music nights to charity fundraisers. The brewery’s spacious and welcoming taproom is a gathering place for friends and neighbors, where stories are shared over pints of locally crafted beer.

Looking ahead, Angry Horse has ambitious plans to expand their reach while staying true to their roots. They aim to collaborate with more local businesses and support community initiatives that align with their values. The addition of Daniella is just the beginning of an exciting chapter in the brewery’s story.

Angry Horse has always been more than just a brewery; it’s a testament to the power of community and the craft of brewing. With the arrival of Daniella, the future looks brighter than ever for this beloved local institution. As they continue to craft exceptional beers that reflect the spirit of Montebello, Angry Horse remains a beacon of community pride and a place where good beer and good company are cherished in equal measure. Cheers to Angry Horse and their new brewer as they embark on this exciting journey together!

Foothills Brewing to Bring Back Iconic Carolina Blonde Ale

October 2, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

WINSTON-SALEM, North Carolina— Winston-Salem’s Foothills Brewing is relaunching the iconic Carolina Blonde Ale in time for this year’s 30th annual Carolina Renaissance Festival in Huntersville, NC.

In a time before the craft beer revolution took flight in North Carolina, Carolina Blonde was many people’s first exposure to small-batch beer. Originally created in Mooresville, NC in 1997 by the Carolina Beer & Beverage Company, Carolina Blonde became a popular beer across the region, the largest craft beer brand, and an early example of craft beer in cans.

“Blonde ales have a lot going for them” says Bill Manley, Sales & Marketing Director at Foothills Brewing. “They are light, crisp, and easy to drink, but still have a lot of flavor. They hit a sweet spot that appeals to light beer fans, and craft drinkers alike.”

Foothills Brewing acquired the Carolina Blonde brand in 2011 and produced the beer as a standalone product. Now, Foothills is wrapping Carolina Blonde into its core portfolio. Following its debut at the upcoming Carolina Renaissance Festival, Foothills will launch the beer in its on-site locations in Winston-Salem, and then region-wide in Spring of 2024.

“The Carolina Blonde brand is such a symbol of the region” says Manley. “Born in North Carolina, and featuring the iconic Cape Hatteras lighthouse on the label, it creates an instant connection with our home state. It was one of the first craft beers I ever tasted, and I remember it well. It’s exciting to be able to breathe new life into a North Carolina classic.”

The choice to debut the beer at the Carolina Renaissance Festival is no coincidence. Carolina Blonde was an original beer sponsor of the annual festival, and then Foothills took-over as the primary craft beer partner in 2012.

“We are excited to help kick off the return of Carolina Blonde. The relaunch is a tribute to rich traditions and creative spirits which makes Carolina Blonde a perfect pairing with the arts and entertainment presented at the Carolina Renaissance Festival.” says Matt Siegel, director of marketing and entertainment at the Carolina Renaissance Festival.

“Foothills is thrilled for the opportunity to partner with the Renaissance Festival” says Jamie Bartholomaus, president and brewmaster of Foothills Brewing. “Supporting community events has been part of Foothills’ mission since day one, and the Renaissance Festival is one of the Carolinas’ best events, drawing crowds from all over the region. It’s a great representation of our state.”

The Carolina Renaissance Festival is celebrating its 30th season and runs Saturdays and Sundays from September 30th through November 19th. www.carolina.renfestinfo.com

Temescal Brewing Is Now the No Jerks Ski Village

October 2, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

OAKLAND, California – Back by popular demand, Temescal Brewing is transforming our taproom and beer garden into the No Jerks Ski Village from November through mid-February for warm, cozy, festive times.

Our goal is to bring aprés-ski vibes to the city. We give our space a floor-to-ceiling makeover for this pop-up. It starts at our front door with an eye-catching ski check. Indoors in the “Temescal Lodge,” we cover every inch with knick knacks, ski ephemera, floating presents, and lights, with a hearth as the centerpiece and plenty of places to take Instagrammable pictures with friends. Our outdoor heated and covered area, the “Festive Ballroom,” evokes a field of snow off the slopes and is available for party rentals for groups of 20-50 guests. All of this is a far cry from our usual pastel aesthetic that guests have enjoyed since we opened in 2016.

For the true ski devotees, we will offer a limited number of No Jerks Ski Village Season Passes. Pass holders get a personalized ID and lanyard, discounts on purchases and free rounds, plus beautiful and exclusive Ski Village merchandise. Pre-sales will be starting soon with details coming on our website.

The festive winter feel also make it onto our menu, with special seasonal beers like Cozy, a winter spiced ale; and our aptly named hazy IPAs: Festive Beverage and Fresh Powder. We’re also serving shotskis, along with hot beer toddies like our mulled version of Cozy. To top it off, we have non-alcoholic flaming hot cocoa and infinite pretzels.

P.S. Our biggest event of the year is right around the corner! Spooky Puppy is 10/29
