Breweries Invited to Participate in 8th Annual New York State Craft Beer Competition

January 31, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

New York State – The New York State Brewers Association (NYSBA) is now accepting submissions for its eighth annual New York State Craft Beer Competition, presented by Ultimate Brew Service. Open to all 500+ licensed breweries in New York State, NYSBA is expecting to receive over 1,200 beer submissions, making it the largest state-level craft beer competition in the country. Demonstrating how New York’s craft beer scene continues to grow and evolve, the 2024 competition will feature two new craft beer categories: Cream Ale and Dark Lagers.

“We’ve adjusted several categories to judge the fantastic beers you are brewing in the fairest way possible,” said Hutch Kugeman, Vice President, New York State Brewers Association. “This year we’ve got a brand-new category for Cream Ale, a style with deep roots in New York State’s brewing history. The gold medal-winning entry for Cream Ale will receive entry into the Great American Beer Festival, sponsored by the NYSBA!”

Cream ales, a proud product of the state, incorporate flaked corn in their brewing process, harnessing the abundance of corn grown in New York. The style emerged in the 1840s but has gained popularity over recent years, with craft breweries putting their own spin on it.

The cost of entry is $55 for NYSBA members and $75 for non-members. Each NYSBA member receives one free beer entry with their membership and there is no limit to the number of beers a brewery can submit. Beers must be entered online no later than Feb. 16, 2024, and arrive at the warehouse no later than Feb. 23, 2024.

“The New York State Craft Brewers Competition is our way of giving all of the 500+ breweries in our state an opportunity to show off the world class beer they’re brewing these days,” said Paul Leone, Executive Director, New York State Brewers Association. “Our industry continues to be strong, and we not only want New Yorkers to know about these award-winning beers, but we also want the world to know.”

The New York State Craft Beer Competition judging will take place on March 2-3, 2024, in Rochester, N.Y. The competition is produced in partnership with Raise a Glass Foundation, an organization with expertise in coordinating beverage competitions of the highest caliber. Raise a Glass Foundation donates proceeds to charities like InterVol, a nonprofit dedicated to connecting the world’s neediest to materials, people, and opportunities.

All entries will be blind judged by a panel based on pre-established criteria and using a custom scoring sheet developed by NYSBA. The top three finishers in each of 31 beer style categories will receive gold, silver, and bronze medals. The overall winner will receive the Governor’s Craft Beer Cup as the best beer in New York State. There will also be an award for New York State Brewery of the Year, which will be determined by a point system in relation to the number of medals won.

The New York State Craft Beer Competition Celebration and Awards Ceremony will take place as the closing event of the New York State Brewers Conference on Fri., Mar. 22, 2024, at 6:30PM. The industry-member exclusive event is closed to the public, but enthusiasts are invited to tune in to the Awards Ceremony via the New York State Craft Beer YouTube Channel. Batson River Brewing Begins Distribution of Acadian Skies Dark Lager in Maine

January 31, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

WELLS, Maine— Batson River Brewing & Distilling, an independent Maine craft brewery, announced the distribution of its Acadian Skies dark lager throughout southern Maine. The German-style Schwarzbier showcases the trademark dark hue from a carefully crafted malt bill that lends notes of coffee with a teasing of chocolate. Thanks to the traditional lager yeast, everything culminates in a clean, crisp finish, ensuring a remarkably easy drinking dark lager.

Sale Manager Justin Sharkey sees this as a big step forward for the Maine brewery: “We’ve always viewed Acadian Skies as a core beer for us and Dark Lagers are simply exploding right now. But we’ve held an affinity for the style for years, quietly working to refine this beer to the best version of itself. It’s the culmination of a lot of hard work and market demand saying- It’s time! And the support we’ve received from our retail partners has been beyond our expectations, which speaks volumes about the passion customers have for the style.”

Alaskan Brewing Introduces Pilot Series in 4-Packs

January 22, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

JUNEAU, Alaska— This month, Alaskan Brewing Company, the independently owned brewery in Juneau, began packaging its Pilot Series beers in 4-pack, 12-ounce bottles. After 26 years, the smaller bottles will replace the brewery’s large 22-ounce bottles for its Pilot Series offerings.

The Alaskan Brewing Pilot Series has been a staple in the craft beer industry; featuring seasonal limited-release beers consisting of big, bold, and distinctive brews that change every year. In addition to the Pilot Series, the award-winning limited vintage Smoked Porter, released every fall, will also be available in the new 4-pack format.

The pivot in packaging comes after years of dwindling shelf space for the 22-ounce bottles. “The larger bottle format was initially a great way to bring new beer styles to market, and the craft consumer could try them in a small volume, without committing to a full 6-pack,” Alaskan Brewing Director of Sales Merv Boyce said. “We see a real opportunity to increase the visibility and availability at retail, to showcase our outstanding Pilot Series offerings.”

The new 12-ounce 4-pack is a nod to the brewery’s commitment to sustainability. “By focusing our production line on 12-ounce bottles, Alaskan Brewing Company will use fewer resources to reconfigure its production line when filling and packaging the larger 22-ounce bottles,” Boyce added.

This year, the Pilot Series kicks off with Imperial Hazy IPA. The Imperial Hazy IPA pours a golden haze with tropical fruit notes of guava, passionfruit, and strawberry, complementing its hop flavor. Crafted with pale, flaked oats, wheat, and Brumalt, this specialty brew offers a 40 IBU and eight percent ABV.

Imperial Hazy IPA and other upcoming Pilot Series products are available in all current Alaskan Brewing Company markets. To find Pilot Series 4-packs near you visit the Beer Finder at www.alaskanbeer.com/find-our- beer/.

In addition to producing world-class beverages, Alaskan Brewing Company strives for innovation through progressive programs like employee ownership and a commitment to environmental stewardship.

Brooklyn Brewery Champions Inclusivity in Brewing Industry With Official Certification as a SIGBI Safe Space for LGBTQ+

January 18, 2024 by Spencer Mapes

BROOKLYN, New York— Brooklyn Brewery, located in one of the most culturally diverse areas of the country, has consistently supported and reflected the varied backgrounds of its community. Today, the Brewery, a pioneering force in the craft brewing industry and a long-standing partner of The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI) since its inception in 2017, proudly announces its certification of both Brooklyn Brewery’s headquarters and the Tasting Room in Williamsburg, Brooklyn as a SIGBI Safe Space for the LGBTQ+ community. This certification emphasizes the brewery’s commitment to creating spaces, both in the physical world and online, that are safe, accessible, inclusive, and respectful to all, and is part of Brooklyn Brewery’s broader commitment to foster inclusivity and diversity within itself and the wider brewing industry.

Brooklyn Brewery’s dedication to creating a welcoming environment for all is not new. The Brewery has consistently shown its support for LGBTQ+ rights, a commitment highlighted by its collaboration with SIGBI with its year-round brewing of The Stonewall Inn IPA. Since 2017, this beer has served as a symbol of Brooklyn Brewery’s solidarity and support for the community. Additionally, since launching in 2021, Brooklyn Brewery has been actively expanding on their Create Space initiative; a global program that draws inspiration from the legacy of The Stonewall Inn, by leveraging the Brewery’s platforms worldwide to amplify the voices of LGBTQ+ activists who are continuing the essential fight for equality, acceptance, and the freedom for everyone to be who they are. Brooklyn Brewery’s SIGBI Safe Spaces Certification represents a further step in their unwavering dedication to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.

All of Brooklyn Brewery’s efforts align with the larger goals of SIGBI, which were inspired by the struggles and ideals of the LGBTQ+ rights movement born from the Stonewall Inn riots of 1969. Through awareness campaigns, educational programming, and fundraising, SIGBI supports grassroots organizations and marginalized communities, with a focus on areas where progress toward equality has been slow.

SIGBI established the Safe Spaces Certification Program following a survey they conducted that highlighted a significant demand within the LGBTQ+ community—97% indicated a need for more safe spaces. Developed in collaboration with leading experts from marginalized communities nationwide, this program is now being rolled out across various sectors, targeting entertainment venues, food and beverage establishments, retail stores, businesses, and other public spaces, aiming to certify these as welcoming and secure environments for LGBTQ+ individuals. The certification process involved extensive training and policy development to ensure that Brooklyn Brewery and their other partners uphold the highest standards of inclusivity and safety for LGBTQ+ employees, customers, and partners.

Stacy Lentz, CEO of SIGBI, commented, “Brooklyn Brewery’s certification as a Safe Space is a significant step in our ongoing effort to expand the network of inclusive and supportive environments. Their commitment serves as a beacon for the brewing industry and beyond, demonstrating that inclusivity and respect are integral to business success.”

In addition to its internal efforts, Brooklyn Brewery is leveraging its influence in the brewing industry to encourage its partners and peers to embrace similar values of diversity and inclusivity. The brewery aims to create a ripple effect, inspiring other members of the industry to join the Safe Spaces Certification Program and contribute to a more inclusive society.

Robin Ottaway, President of Brooklyn Brewery, acknowledged the significance of this Safe Space certification: “Our journey towards becoming a SIGBI Safe Space reflects our deep belief in the importance of corporate responsibility in fostering social change. We have been privileged to collaborate with SIGBI since they first formed in 2017, and we are extremely proud to use this certification to set an example for the brewing industry and beyond. This demonstrates that our commitment to inclusivity and respect is not just a moral imperative but also a key to success in business.”

As Brooklyn Brewery steps forward as a Certified Safe Space, it not only reaffirms its commitment to the LGBTQ+ community but also challenges the brewing industry to follow suit; signaling a shift towards greater inclusivity and respect for all. Brooklyn Brewery welcomes industry partners to also become SIGBI Certified Safe Spaces.

About The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative

The Stonewall Inn Gives Back Initiative (SIGBI) is a non-profit charitable organization inspired by the struggles and ideals of the LGBTQ rights movement born from the Stonewall Inn Uprising of 1969. They are committed to eliminating the social intolerance that is profoundly impacting the lives of LGBTQ citizens throughout America and abroad. Through awareness campaigns, educational programming, fundraising and candid public dialogue, they support grassroots organizations scattered across the world and especially those in communities where progress toward equality has been slow and the negative impact of ongoing acts of discrimination and harassment can no longer be tolerated.

About Brooklyn Brewery

(“Tilray” or the “Company”) (NASDAQ: TLRY and TSX: TLRY), announced the release of two bold additions to the SweetWater Gummies line of brews, its latest run on fruit-flavored, high-alcohol beers. Prepare to ditch the winter blues with Sour Watermelon India Pale Ale (IPA) and Cherry Limeaid IPA, which are both brewed with real fruit and clock in at 9.5% alcohol-by-volume (ABV).

SweetWater’s progressive brews push the boundaries of flavor with Sour Watermelon IPA features a watermelon candy aroma, a crisp fruity body with a hint of tartness, and a slightly sweet finish. Cherry Limeaid IPA leads with a lime-forward profile, a subtle maraschino cherry aroma, a sweet citrus body, and a hint of candy cherry flavor with a clean, sweet finish.

“As a brewery that thrives on fresh ideas and flavor exploration, we are excited to introduce Sour Watermelon and Cherry Limeaid to our SweetWater Gummies lineup, which we’ve crafted to satisfy the strong demand for full-flavored, high-ABV beers,” said Ty Gilmore, President of U.S. Beers for SweetWater Brewing Company. “Gummies are easy to drink and are perfect to kick start the night, whether you’re throwing a house party, watching the game, or drinking with a few friends.”
