The Virginia Beer Co. Announces Brand Refresh/Portfolio Realignment

March 10, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia— This week, The Virginia Beer Company formally announced a brand refresh that has been over a year in the making. The effort culminated with the official introduction of a new addition to its year-round lineup: Gorgeous, a 100% Citra IPA.

Gorgeous has been available in limited quantities in the past, but due to its overwhelming popularity, the Virginia Beer Co. team is excited to elevate it to the brewery’s core lineup going forward.

“We’ve been steadily introducing the market to the new look and feel of the packaging on our core beers since last spring,” said Chris Smith, co-founder of The Virginia Beer Company. “Brand refreshes take a lot of planning but have started to become a little more common in the industry. We thought timing the official announcement of the refresh around the new year-round status of Gorgeous would give our customers something to get excited about.”

Soft, citrusy Gorgeous Citra IPA (5.7%) joins three other freshly rebranded flagship beers: Elbow Patches (6.2%), Virginia Beer Co.’s award-winning smooth, roasty Oatmeal Stout – Saving Daylight (4.9%), an anytime citrusy American Wheat – and Free Verse (6.8%), the brewery’s best-selling Hazy IPA.

The new packaging represents a cleaner, more modern take for the 7-year-old brewery, whose original aesthetic skewed towards more of a retro look. The bright packaging, coupled with the fresh flagship beer and recent expansion to the entire state (including availability in large regional & statewide retailers), positions the brewery well for a big year. But ultimately The Virginia Beer Company – referred to by their founders as a force for good in the form of a brewery – wants customers to know that the brand refresh was done for them.

“We want people to really understand that when we get feedback, we listen,” said Robby Willey, co-founder of The Virginia Beer Company. “This was a collaborative effort that included feedback from everyone in our brewery’s family: our distributors, retailers, loyal customers, and the ‘VBC’ team all gave feedback on the brand refresh. We’re an incredibly community-conscious brewery, and we really treated this process like a community event. And we are really excited how this new look & feel reflects not just the liquid in the cans, but our whole brand identity these 7 years after first opening our doors & taps in 2016.”

About The Virginia Beer Company

The Virginia Beer Company is a brewery, taproom, and beer garden located in Williamsburg, VA’s Edge District. The brewery was founded by two graduates of nearby William & Mary, who shared a passion for philanthropy, community, and great beer. VBC is proud to have their beer available throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia, as well as in New York and in multiple countries overseas including Japan and France. Since opening in 2016, VBC continues to be guided by the principles shared by its core of founding team members: Beer · People · Purpose.

Dragon’s Milk Announces Packaging Refresh, New Beers, RTS Cocktail

March 10, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

HOLLAND, Michigan – Dragon’s Milk announced a full flight of upgrades to its bourbon barrel-based brand family of beer and high-proof bourbon, including new packaging and new products.

First, fans of the #1 selling American-made stout will notice a completely new look on the shelves. The signature black-and-white packaging, along with the iconic dragon, have evolved to better showcase the attributes that consumers have come to expect from the Dragon’s Milk brand family; namely: bourbon barrel-aging and potent ABV in a 4-pack bottle format.

“We’re committed to providing a premium beer experience to our fans, and our new packaging more accurately reflects that goal. The new 4-pack carriers maximize visibility and readability on shelf, and create a beautiful billboard of brands when placed side-by-side. Increasing the height of the carriers is also better for the beer, protecting it from harmful light exposure. The dragon has never looked better and is truly ready to fly!” said Dominic Bergquist, Brand Manager for the Dragon’s Milk portfolio.

Coinciding with the launch of new packaging is the release of two new beers into the Dragon’s Milk brand family: Crimson Keep and Tales of Gold. Crimson Keep is a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Red Ale, and Tales of Gold is a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Golden Ale with Milk Sugar. Both brews tout superior drinkability at a potent 11% ABV, in-line with the signature stout. These new brands expand the Dragon’s Milk family into familiar style groups ripe for innovation. Both beers will see distribution across the brand’s footprint beginning in March.

Rounding out beer updates is the annual release of the highly touted Dragon’s Milk Triple Mash. Aged for one year in bourbon barrels, Triple Mash clocks in at 17% ABV. Also featuring exciting new packaging, this beer will release in New Holland Brewing Co.’s Holland and Grand Rapids, MI brewpubs on Saturday March 18, and will receive limited distribution in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin shortly after.

Finally, the Dragon’s Milk bourbon portfolio continues to grow. Following on the success of the first stouted-bourbon, Beer Barrel Bourbon, Dragon’s Milk Ready-to-Serve Old Fashioned cocktail will premiere in a 375ml bottle. The Old Fashioned is made with Beer Barrel Bourbon, house-made bitters, orange peel oil, and their signature Simple Syrup which is crafted by reducing down the flagship Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout into a syrup and adding sugar. The syrup adds an incredibly unique and delicious savory and sweet quality to the cocktail. The Old Fashioned will be available in late April and will be sold throughout Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Kentucky in Meijer stores and local retailers.

About Dragon’s Milk

Throughout the ages, Dragon’s Milk has been a term used to describe potent ales and elixirs worthy of a celebration, a reward at the end of the journey. New Holland Brewing Co. is proud to continue that tradition today with the Dragon’s Milk family of brands. What began as a single barrel of beer in 2001 has now become a full portfolio of legendary beverages, led by Dragon’s Milk Bourbon Barrel-Aged Stout, the #1 selling American-made stout.

Backwoods Brewing to Open 19-Acre Resort Property Party Acres

March 9, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

CARSON, Washington— Backwoods Brewing releases Party Acres Hazy IPA ahead of opening their 19-acre resort property Party Acres, a playground for lovers of the Gorge.

“We bought the property in 2020,” says owner and CEO Steve Waters, “and have been drawing multiple designs in the sandbox ever since.” They finally landed on a site plan, with Phase 1 being cabins hidden away in the woods in Carson, Washington. The cabins will open this spring, and Phase 2 of Party Acres will be bringing Backwoods’ existing pub and brewery operations on site as well.

Alongside these plans, Backwoods has other fun ideas in the works with an estimated time frame to be decided, including a disc golf course, zip line and potentially an amphitheater for live entertainment.

“We’ve got plans in motion, and are leaving space to dream up exciting ideas for the property and our cozy cabins. With all the activities in the area we are excited to give people more reasons to love coming to play and stay in the Columbia River Gorge.” says owner Debbie Waters.

Party Acres, the beer, is a Hazy IPA made with lush, tropical hops, and is light enough to be enjoyed on any outdoor adventure. Backwoods has been playing with the recipe on draft for over a year, and is finally ready to take it to prime time in 12 ounce cans. It will take their hazy slot, previously occupied by Hazy in the Gorge.

“When it came time to name the beer, we thought about it for 5 seconds before thinking, ‘Why don’t we name it after the property?’” said Tom Waters, COO and owner of Backwoods, “Party Acres has been a dream of my dad’s (fellow owner Jim Waters) since before I was born.”

“When I was a kid, my buddies and I always wanted a place we could go to get away,” says Jim.

The fabled earthly paradise would be called Party Acres. “It’s pretty exciting to be making that dream a reality. But what we’re doing here is going to be a little bit more classy than what me and my buddies had in mind back then.” Born from the vision of a collective place for family and friends to celebrate the good times, Party Acres will be a resort with something for everyone.

“And in the spirit of Backwoods, we’re aiming for the blend we always try to strike of woodsy and adventurous, while also laid-back and comfortable,” says Steve Waters. “We want to be the place you think of when you want to get away.”

Look for the Party Acres beer in stores and on tap at the Backwoods pubs right now – and plan to book a night or two at the Party Acres cabins beginning in May 2023.

Migration Brewing Announces Maple Barleywine Release

March 8, 2023 by Spencer Mapes

PORTLAND, Oregon – Migration Brewing will be releasing their Maple Coronet barley wine to the market on Friday, March 3rd. This unique American barley wine is the latest limited release from the company’s burgeoning Migrator barrel aged series. The brewery partnered up with Glenna Farms out of Amery, Wisconsin to secure the organic maple syrup. Aged for six months on Heaven Hill bourbon barrels; the rich, decadent beer will be available in 500ml bottles at local specialty shops around the Portland metro area. The beer will also be available on draft and in bottles at all Migration pubs.

“We were super stoked to work with Glenna Farms on this project. They produce some of the finest organic syrup in Wisconsin and the bourbon barrels are exceptional,” said Mike Branes, Co-Founder and Head Brewer at Migration Brewing. “We’ve been pushing the brewery team to work with a wide variety of ingredients and this beer really came together over a ton of excitement to approach a classic American barleywine differently,” notes Branes.

The Maple Coronet barley wine is brewed to be a complex, and slightly sweet early springtime treat. Coming in at 11% ABV the beer is crafted on a foundation of fine English Maris Otter malt which brings a nutty richness and full roundness to the beer. Three different types of caramel malts exhibit toffee and tones of cherry, plum and raisin. Maple syrup was added during the run-off of the wort, as well as during fermentation, to provide extra sugars. The maple sweetness is not overpowering and integrates into the beer without being cloyingly sweet.

Glenna Farms was established in 1995when Rick and Kristine Glenna purchased an 80-acre maple syrup operation from Arthur V. Olson. The century old sugar bush is located next to a dairy farm, was well known for producing one of nature’s finest sweeteners, pure maple syrup.

About Migration Brewing

Migration Brewing started in 2010 when four friends came together over a passion for craft beer and a dream of opening a brewpub. With a lot of bootstrapping and a little luck, they have since opened four pub locations within Portland. As an award-winning brewery, the Migration team takes great pride in producing world-class beers that embrace innovation while respecting classic styles.

The El Segundo Brewing/Steve Austin Partnership

The first collaboration between El Segundo and Austin came about when the wrestling icon visited the brewery with a buddy. He was already a fan of El Segundo’s Mayberry IPA and after chatting with founder Rob Croxall he shared that he had an interest in pursuing a brewery project of his own. From that conversation a collaboration ensued and ultimately Broken Skull IPA – the name inspired by Austin’s wrestling background – came to life. Austin was very involved in the development of the IPA and the flavor profile reflects his input. The collaboration was incredibly successful and El Segundo has dramatically expanded their distribution footprint due in large part to the success of Broken Skull IPA. Following the tremendous success of Broken Skull IPA, El Segundo expanded its partnership with Austin in 2022 with the release of Broken Skull American Lager.

Broken Skull Double IPA

Answering the fans’ call, the collaborators have created Broken Skull Double IPA, a limited release beer with 8.0% ABV. Centennial Hops – along with Citra, Chinook and Cascade – give it more of a citrus punch, and notes of candied citrus, papaya and underripe mango are balanced with a clean malt backbone.

“Think of it like the big brother to Broken Skull IPA,” said El Segundo Founder Rob Croxall. “Broken Skull Double IPA offers a heavyweight punch with a cruiserweight body that won’t weigh you down. Can I get a double ‘Hell Yea’?”

The Double IPA will be available for purchase this spring in the following retailers: HEB; Total Wine & More; Spec’s Wine, Spirits & Finer Foods; Central Market; Albertsons; and your favorite independent beer shops.

About El Segundo Brewing

El Segundo Brewing is an independent craft brewery founded by Rob Croxall and Tom Kelley in El Segundo, California 2011. El Segundo focuses on fresh, hoppy, West Coast IPAs and clean lagers that can be found on tap walls and in retailers across 27 states as well as Japan. In 2014, El Segundo formed a partnership with Steve Austin to launch the Broken Skull Beer IPA. The incredible success of that release resulted in the expansion of the brewery capacity and output and an ongoing partnership between Austin and El Segundo.

CAMPBELL, California – Surreal Brewing Company, the non-alcoholic craft beer brand from Northern California, is proud to announce its latest partnership with Virginia’s premier beverage distributor, Specialty Beverage. After successfully launching a series of distribution deals in key markets and experiencing significant growth throughout the states of Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, and Ohio, Co-Founders Donna Hockey and Tammer Zein-El-Abedein hope to build upon the momentum they have gained to introduce Surreal Brewing to craft beer loving consumers across the state of Virginia seeking great tasting options for moderation.

“Surreal Brewing sells through distributors as well as through our e-commerce platform and has many orders coming from the East Coast,” said Donna Hockey, Co-Founder of Surreal Brewing Company. “Our goal is to get delicious NA beer to people in real-time without waiting for it to be delivered from CA. We are happy to serve the mid-Atlantic region through Specialty Beverage.”
